I am an existing customer with AT&T and I was looking at the rates for the iPhone at this site for the existing rates http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html. I am wondering do I have to get the unlimited data and text messaging? I know its good to have cause the of the visual voice mail but do I have to get it? Or can I just buy it and continue with my current contract that I have with them?

You have to have the iPhone plan, which is unlimited data and 200 sms.

I talked to a AT&T rep in store, and they told me that since the computer upgrades when moving to AT&T, they can no longer make changes that contradict phone 'requirements'. Like if you buy a PDA phone, it will make it have a PDA plan. So I'm guessing this is going to be pretty strictly enforced.

I just called and they told me that I have to get it once I buy it and then take it off right away. I don't see why they would make you get it and then let you remove it.

Well, the activation through iTunes will automatically add it.

If they'll remove it (and they end up being able to), more power to ya. Apparently the rep can get in some serious trouble for doing something like that. They used to be able to get away with more under Cingular, but apparently AT&T has really be cracking the whip on that sort of stuff, from what I hear.

I'm pretty sure you don't have a choice. I think the iPhone requires a data plan to even work. I don't think voice-only plans will work: you must add in at least the $20/month plan to use your phone.
(My understanding)
