I live in the UK and I'm heading out to Orlando for a few weeks. I REALLY want an iPhone and I was wondering if you thought it was worth me buying one out there and using the hack to just use the Wifi and iPod. It will be a lot cheaper for me to buy in USA. If i did use that hack to activate the iPod and Wifi and then they found someway to unlock the iPhone altogether would I be able to unlock it or by using the first hack would I have screapped my chances of that?

I just need some pointers or advice about how good the iPod and Wifi functions are and whether it is worth buying one.

I'm trying to weigh out the Pros and cons and the pro that outweighs everything else is that I would get soo much attention haha!

All help welcome!

Thanks! :laugh2:

Yeah, I guess it's worth it. I don't care for the phone feature - I just like the internet and iPod. Buy it!

I can't help you too much with making that decision, but I can provide feedback on unlocking via the hack.

When I bought my iPhone I wasn't sure I was going to keep it. I accepted the 10% "restocking" fee but didn't want to deal with AT&T.

So I bought it and unlocked it. I loved it, even as just an email/webpad/iPod/whatever device. Pretty cool.

But then I figured I might as well give AT&T a shot. The fact that I had already hacked made no difference at all. In fact the "hack" to unlock isn't really an iPhone hack at all--it's more of a server impersonization hack, or iTunes hack. I wouldn't worry about that for the future.

But as always, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).

The iPhone cool, no doubt. In your situation, however, no way would I consider spending over $600 for a device that will probably be unusable (or at least potentially inferior if the EU market gets 3g) once the iPhone is available over there. Unless money isn't an issue for you, I'd seriously consider waiting for your version of the iPhone.

I really don't mind about not having 3G or any other of the features that are missing. I will mainly always be in a Wifi area.

really the main concern to investigate is whether or not the phone function will ever work for you in the UK.

don't do it. Just wait for it to be released in the UK. Its an awesome device, but it also leaves a lot to be desired. I mean for me being an Apple advocate, but the iPhone with its current features are barely worth it.
So in short, the iPhone would just be worth it with its current feature set. But with it's pottential it throws it over the top... To me without phone service, visual voicemail, and the intergration of everything it wouldn't be worth it. You'll just be disappointed. IMO.

Good luck,

Come to think of it, the Nokia internet tablet is about 85% of the iPhone if you remove the phone function from the equation. Probably more than that, but I'm only vaguely familiar with the device. If they aren't readily available in the UK, stop in at a CompUSA while you're in Florida. They stock them, and have recently begun selling the HTC Advantage much cheaper than I've seen anywhere online (unlocked). I still plan to get one of those toward the end of the year for my businesss. Apparently I'm going to have to get my wife an iPhone, first! I'm still of the opinion you should hold off until you guys have your own version of the iPhone over there. You're gonna end up with the iPhone branded version of Nokia's Internet tablet, otherwise - at double the cost.

If I were you I would wait until November/December when it gets released in the UK. You're only talking about three or four more months.
