Need help updating iPhone 3GS to iOS 5.0.1

Hey so here's my problem. I've got a jailbroken iPhone 3GS which was gifted to me last week by my elder sister. It has ios 4.1 but when i try to update it to ios 5.0.1 it says firmware not compatible. In iTunes it says you can only update till iOS 4.2. But my friends iPhone 3G run iOS 5.0.1. I don't have any SHSH files saved..

Please help me...I want to update it..Help will be appreciated.

Check the host file on your computer. Probably still pointed to Cydias servers and not Apples, thus the errors.

RoofMonkey Hey but its a error of firmware not compatible not for the error u gave i tried all ways but it didn't work..I also change the host file to Apples server..But it was of no help..Any more help will be appreciated.

If you changed the host file and saved it, you should be able to update / restore it through iTunes at that point.
Not sure what else to tell you. If you are downloading the firmware file directly to your computer be sure you are getting the correct one.

Do you still want 5.0.1 firmware? The latest firmware for the 3GS is 5.1.1 now. Did you try to update your iPhone through iTunes with the "Update" button when you plugged your iPhone into iTunes?
Try that first. If that doesn't work for you then continue reading.
On your desktop go to your internet browser address bar and type this in: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
Then go down the list until you find the firmware link that you want to download for the 3GS.
After that is complete, plug your iPhone into your computer and wait for iTunes to recognize your device. After iTunes recognizes your device, on the left side of iTunes, there will be a list of options you can pick from. Search for "DEVICES" which will have your iPhone name under it.
Click on your iPhone name.
Your information for your iPhone will pop up.
Sync your iPhone so that you will have a backup for your device.
This is IMPORTANT:
After you have synced your device, press and hold the "Shift" key on your keyboard then click on the "Restore" button.
Your windows directory should pop up. If it didn't pop up, try again.
Locate where you have saved the firmware, select it and press "Open".
Then follow what iTunes is telling you. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to contact me.

Did you read the OP's first post? It's jailbroken and will not update / upgrade to the firmware they have downloaded....

It seems that iPhone 3G's last latest firmware is 4.2.1 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

No. That is the latest and last firmware that Apple brought out and signed for the 3G. Apple doesn't support 3G's anymore. The minimal model that Apple supports now is the 3GS.
