This happened to me once... I reseted it(Hold the home and the unlock button on top for a couple of seconds) and it worked fine.
I have restarted it, checked all my sound settings, obviously checked the volume. and nothing. When I go to settings to change ringtones, I can hear them. But nothing else. No clicks when I dial numbers, I have vibrate off and Silent Off.
That's what happened to me too, but a reset worked for me. Try resetting again I guess, don't know what else to tell you. The speaker works, as you know since you can hear the ringtones, so I don't know. Keep resetting. It never happened to me again.
Very good point, after jogging last night with the ear buds. I just unplugged and layed it down. Maybe it didn't switch back. Excellent theory. I'm at work right now. So until I get back home at 5 I will have no idea.
i just went home on break to get my headphones, and no luck. Still doesn't seem to work. If anyone else thinks it could be a setting a missed somewhere. Please tell me.
Andy - this same thing happened to me after I used my Belkin adapter for my auxillary plug in the car. I had to put my earbud plug in, push down and jiggle the plug aggressively to force the circuit to close -- then pull the plug out and see what happens.

Thanks, but another question is could it have something to do with me hooking it up to my headunit? It runs an iPod chord straight from the headunit. It's made for iPod. Didn't know if it could have switched something either.
Happened to me...had to reinsert the headphones, listened to music for a second and then unplugged. Sound was working fine after that. So far it has been just a one time occurrence.
I've tried the headphone thing, pushed it in there, listened on headphones. That works. Unplugged and replugged, rebooted, checked all sound settings. Nothing

I remember that I also did a full restore when my sound went. You might want to consider this as your last resort. I did a full restore, then put the earbud plug in - pushed down with some good pressure while twisting it around. I did this for about 3-5 seconds and all the sudden heard a 1-2 second noise come from the speaker. Unplugged the earbuds and all was fine.
Andy - also, keep in mind that if a restore and jiggling the earbud plug does not work you will most likely be exchanging the phone. So, make sure you really give that plug a good bit or pressure and wiggle it aggressively back and forth when it is in.
I am almost positive that you have a stuck sensor within the jack. When your earbuds are unplugged the sensor is staying open, thus, telling the iPhone to put all sound through the headphone jack.
This happen to me once and I scrambled the various forums to try and get help. Finally, someone told me to do this and it worked. I have yet to have the problem again, but I have also not plugged it into my car again via the Belkin adapter.
