No stylus?

Good day to us all...

I guess without a stylus, I better get my fingers thinner so that I won't accidentally press the wrong menu item.... LOL (I have thick fingers...)

It WILL NOT respond to anything but a human* finger . I stress finger but I guess it could be any non clothed body part. It reacts to heat and pressure I believe. I.e. If your wearing gloves it wont work.

Jobs stated that one of the benefits of a multi-touch display is that it can ignore inadvertent presses. When combined with its predictive text feature, it should eliminate problems caused by "thick fingers". At least that is what Apple believes. We will have to wait until we can test it for ourselves before we can know for sure.

Thanks for the info... Actually, I am so looking forward to the iPhone coming out that even with "thick fingers" I would still buy it. I really think that the concept is a highly marketable one.

I had a problem with other phones that had actual buttons to press that I would inadvertently apply pressure and I would end up making a call or pressing the wrong button or whatever if I didn't lock the phone first. So, if what Apple says is correct, that would be wonderful!

The predictive text feature of the iPhone will likely be a boon to the "thick finger problem," but no touch display will know which menu item or widget you meant to touch. I do imagine that the display will sense the center of the fingerprint, so you'd have to be significantly off for a touch to be misunderstood. (Not so for humans. )

LOL! Your last comment there reminds me of that great Roberto Benigni movie called "Il Mostro." (The Monster.) If you ever get a chance to see it, it's one of the funniest movies ever made.

The gist of the movie is that there's a mysterious man in town who's molesting women and everyone's after the guy. Turns out it's just an innocent and bumbling Roberto Benigni repeatedly getting into awkward and hillarious situations where he ends up accidentally touching women. Even Benigni is terrified and thinks "the monster" is also after him. (All very Italian; like Fellini's "La Citta della Donna" - City of Women.)

Oh god, now I have to go rent it again.

Wish I could just download it from iTunes.

i don't think the finger will be an issue at all. They probably would have thought about the "thick finger" don't you think? I have a feeling we'll all be incredibly surprised by how well it works. Maybe not though, could suck bad. Just don't know.

I would think that R/D would have considered "thick fingers." I am just excited about getting my hands (albeit "thick") on a iPhone just to see what the result would be. I would think that unless the buttons are REALLY close to one another, it shouldn't really be an issue, but the demo makes it seem as though it will be a good space apart....

The other issue (discussed in another thread) is the issue of getting oils and whatever from our fingers on the screen, where a stylus would lessen that possibility. I am kind of crazy about trying to keep my screen (of my PDA, my laptop, my cell phone) clean...

In any rate, June can't come fast enough....

Better without a stylus.

I think the iPhone is better without a stylus because you always lose them and it is more comfortable, fun, and you can use multitouch with your fingers.

I think fat fingers were considered when the iPhone was designed. In the demo, Jobs showed how when typing an email it highlited the letters you were on, and you could very easily see so if you were on the wrong one, you could correct before lifting your finger back off the screen.

I anticipate the launcher and other apps will have similar functionality, thus solving the old "fat finger" problem (I suffer from this too on my Treo)
