This update seems to have killed my 3GS

It gets to the point where it is "waiting for iPhone" and the iPhone is displaying an empty gas gauge. Then it just sits there. Forever.

I have tried to restart this 10 times, and it always ends the same way. My iPhone is in "DFU" mode (?) with the iTunes plug displayed, and iTunes says I must restore it. But the restore hangs the same way each time.

I am using the same PC I always use for this, and my iPhone is not JB.

Update: <whew>, the 11th time (or was it 12th?) that I tried this it worked. The restore of my data is running now.

Re-Activate

Does anyone if a reactivation will be needed after the upgrade? Iam tethering the download and not sure if tethering will work after 3.1. My work filters do not allow access.

This update disables mms that I had with 3.1 beta 3. You need to install .ipcc file.

Mine was jb, I restored first (*and if you have apps in Catagories, get them out first!) I am updating now. I always like to start with restore new instead of back up. I feel like I have a fresh new iPhone, then wait until the jb comes out, no big deal.

I think you will need to install the ipcc file again and hope that it works.

Can't do voice commands with my Motorola s9, and also can't skip fwd/bwd through music.
I can do voice commands with my Motorola S9 - press the phone button briefly and you'll hear the tone (I tried a long press at first as you do with the iPhone's Home button, but this just re-dialed the last number called). I still can't do fast forward/backward, though.

Here is my plan when I get home. If it is flawed please let me know.

3.1 Upgrade

Backup Cydia apps
Delete Categories
Backup data to syncdocs
Backup iPhone to iTunes (just in case)
Install iTunes 9
Install 3.1 as new phone
Sync to get contacts and calendar data back
Load apps from iTunes library
Load data from sync docs
Load music/videos/pictures from iTunes library

I still have mms and didn't have the hacked ipcc uploaded to my phone before the update. I updated from beta 3 also.

I tried updating my jailbroken 3gs, not unlocked just jailbroken, and I got an error 1602 could not update, and now I'm stuck at the USB + iTunes screen... Help please! Phone is not detected under iTunes.

Thanks, it worked! Once again you have enlightened me!

I don't know too much about Syncdocs.

  1. Does this backup all the individual apps' data?
  2. Is it user-friendly--meaning, is there a GUI or is it command-line?
  3. What's the difference between this and using WinSCP (or similar program) to transfer files?
Thanks!

I use syncdocs to backup my 3rd party app's data such as for Tap Forms, Notebooks, and my banking app. It's very user friendly and syncs OTA with my PC.

iTunes 9 is meant to be okay with jailbroken/unlocked iPhones but it is not known weather it will let you restore a custom IPSW yet.

did they ever say anything about a better battery life. has anybody seen actual improvements instead of new features?
