Yes you can but if something goes wrong and you need to restore then you need your pc/mac. Everything else will be pretty much ok.

Leftovers

Something I noticed after the update (without restore, on a AppTapp phone with some programs installed via Installer but NOT jailbreaked or anything like that. Just apptapp/installer)

After the update earlier today I had about 80+MB of "Other" listed in iTunes. (I think that was from some stuff I installed with the installer app.)

I just did a restore/sync and my "Other" is now listed at 22.7MB

I think people who just install the update over a modded phone should think about doing a restore to gain that space back and make sure that all that old stuff is gone. You never know if that old stuff in there can mess you up in the future or not.

Why is it that some people seem to think that Apple should make their firmware updates compatable with third-party apps? How exactly would they do that? And why? They said that they would release updates for the iPhone to improve its functionality and add features. This is the first step towards that. The only way to release and enable these updates effectively is by ensuring that they will be installed on stock, unmodded, phones. How in the world would they be able to ensure that the update would install appropriately on any iPhone if every one of them was potentially different through modification, thus the need for a restore. I have a modded phone and wouldn't expect Apple to do anything to protect my mods. I also understand their desire to stop modding if possible. It makes technical support a ***** if you don't really know what people have done or tried to do with their iPhones. Bottom line, don't expect long term support or firmware updates from Apple for your iPhone if you think you can't live without NES or your precious icons...

Can anyone tell me how to go back to 1.0.2. I wanna reverse!
you can't go back now. 1.1.1 will not let you hold down shift and select the firmware, you are stuck until the hackers can figure something out. Sorry man, but thats the risks you take when you update.

I bought this phone to have fully functional capabilities AND third party apps. I just bought it about two weeks ago, so I've got about two weeks left. I'm sending it back and getting my $400.

Ahem....

And in a final vote.....It would appear that the virgin iPhones have won! We sympathize with everyone that lost their apps....but we won!:laugh2::cool:

All kidding aside, I am happy with the update but I suppose I would be since I never modded before and wouldn't know what I'm missing.

The update killed my iPhone.

As soon as it tried to install the update, the phone went into "you must plug me into iTunes and reinstall everything now" mode. I haven't done any modding or hacking at all (in fact, I just did a restore two days ago) and when I tried to install the new patch it gave me the yellow triangle and forced me to restore AGAIN. Dammit.

Does anyone know if there's a way to back up the iPhone's settings? Not the files and the music etc, but the actual stuff in the phone like IMAP mail account settings, WIFI passwords, favorites, etc? Having to re-do those every time I restore is a pain in the ass.

Yeah kind of like everytime I update something on my computer EVERYTHING doesn't work anymore. Come on now. Is this a serious post or just someone who is bashing people who enjoy modding things they have. They don't have to "support" 3rd party apps of course not, but they also don't have to be so militant about shutting them down either. Thats like Apple or Microsoft saying the only stuff that can work on your computers are MAC or MS stuff and every update will cause your current programs to stop working totally.

Its my Jeep I want to add bigger tires, Its my computer I want to install my programs, its my PC i want to liquid cool it, its my phone and I want my ring tones and my apps not yours.

And on a side note if I break my Jeep because I added 33inch tires and the axle snapped its my problem not Jeeps, If i install a program on my computer thats a virus and my system crashes its my fault not Apple or Dell or MS's fault, and i I install a ringtone or a Tip Calculator or MobileMoney on MY phone and it breaks my phone its not Apples fault and I would expect to hear a "Sorry Sir, but you installed those at your own risk and we don't support that"

PS
working as a techie and Network Engineer for YEARS, I have often told people "Sorry but that was an unsupported program and if you would like help on that issue your going to have to call XXXXX company and have them help you" So this Apple "supporting" the apps is a weak argument. But a day after a way to get ringtones on your phone was found iTunes comes up with an update. A couple days after another work around another iTunes update and iPhone update. So please not supporting and shutting down are 2 totally different things.

I don't know that they are really... it's just that as a new piece of hardware/software, when they need to make changes they're pretty major an may or may not bust third-party stuff that they haven't authorized. I mean, if it's not their app how do they know whether their new patch will break it or not? I don't think they're necessarily trying to kill third-party stuff... they just are.

Its my Jeep I want to add bigger tires, Its my computer I want to install my programs, its my PC i want to liquid cool it, its my phone and I want my ring tones and my apps not yours.
Bad analogy. If you add bigger tires to your Jeep, you don't have to worry about Jeep releasing an upgrade that breaks compatibility with your tires... but if you put bigger tires on your Jeep and they released an updated Jeep with smaller wheel wells, you'd be out of luck in migrating your big tires to it, right? So you would have to choose not to upgrade, or to give up your third-party tires. Not their problem really... just your choice.
