Yeah kind of like everytime I update something on my computer EVERYTHING doesn't work anymore. Come on now. Is this a serious post or just someone who is bashing people who enjoy modding things they have. They don't have to "support" 3rd party apps of course not, but they also don't have to be so militant about shutting them down either. Thats like Apple or Microsoft saying the only stuff that can work on your computers are MAC or MS stuff and every update will cause your current programs to stop working totally.

Its my Jeep I want to add bigger tires, Its my computer I want to install my programs, its my PC i want to liquid cool it, its my phone and I want my ring tones and my apps not yours.

And on a side note if I break my Jeep because I added 33inch tires and the axle snapped its my problem not Jeeps, If i install a program on my computer thats a virus and my system crashes its my fault not Apple or Dell or MS's fault, and i I install a ringtone or a Tip Calculator or MobileMoney on MY phone and it breaks my phone its not Apples fault and I would expect to hear a "Sorry Sir, but you installed those at your own risk and we don't support that"

PS
working as a techie and Network Engineer for YEARS, I have often told people "Sorry but that was an unsupported program and if you would like help on that issue your going to have to call XXXXX company and have them help you" So this Apple "supporting" the apps is a weak argument. But a day after a way to get ringtones on your phone was found iTunes comes up with an update. A couple days after another work around another iTunes update and iPhone update. So please not supporting and shutting down are 2 totally different things.
You forget one thing, when you buy that Jeep, you don't sign a user agreement or terms of use. Also, adding those 33 inch tires is in no way going to void the warranty.

Furthermore, sure you can add the third party apps! What does anyone here care? but you have to expect Apple (who ranks intellectual property number 1) to do something to prevent it.

Just a thought.

My 2 cents

Hey guys, this is my first post. Ive been trolling the boards here for a while and want to thank all you guys for all the info posted here. Ive added some cool mods to my iPhone and it has become what it should have been out of the box. Seeing what this phone can do WITH MODS, actually makes it worth the $399 price tag.
2 things though...
1. I personally don't think that the update was designed specifically to remove 3rd party apps. Since installer appears as a new icon on the springboard and the update added something new (WiFi Store) to the springboard, wouldn't that mean that the springboard code had to be rewritten. Not to mention the addition of the iBT battery level on the status bar, the status bar code had to also be rewritten. If the springboard code did in fact have to be rewritten, wouldn't that remove any apps that arent part of the original springboard? Just thinking outloud.
2. The only feature I would want from this update would be the iBT battery indicator. Would'nt someone be able to write a mod to add this instead of having to do the Apple update? Seems like these mods cover everything you could think of.

Thanks guys

wrong. if what you changed is the direct reason why your axle broke then it is 100% your fault. Adding heavier tires and wheels to a certain size axle without any re-inforcement is like sucker punching your grandma while she sleeps. You COULD do it but you shouldnt.

and to keep it iPhone related. My update worked perfect!

i too am a Jeep owner sitting ona big lift and tires

No. apps disappear during the update and ringtones disappear during the first sync after the update.

That's fine, I was just wondering if I will be able to mod it back to the way it was, or if the update prevents all modding

As I said previously, even though I was getting (and still am) the spinning dial as you are, I was nevertheless able to make a call using my Apple iPhone bluetooth device. I merely turned the bluetooth off then back on, and when making a call, pressed the button again briefly til I heard the short beep, and got the speaker icon to change to "audio" where I selected bluetooth. Also, as I noted earlier in another post, I still am not getting the bluetooth battery charge indicator when I first turn on my phone and both the phone and bluetooth are in the cradle.

Now, just for the heck of it, I went to settings where that spinning dial is still displayed, and clicked on the box that says "iPhone Bluetooth Headset", then chose to "un-pair". I was unable to "pair" it back using the iPhone. So, I then pulled out my bluetooth instruction booklet. From that I was able to "re-pair" my bluetooth again. I took both the iPhone and the bluetooth out of the cradle, as the instructions stated. I then turned the bluetooth OFF (holding down the top button til you hear the descending tones). Then, turn it back on (hold the button down again, until you hear the ascending tones). I then briefly pressed that button again and and heard a very short "beep". At that point, a screeen popped up on my iPhone, asking me to enter a "pin code". From the instruction booklet, it tells you to enter "pin code" 0000 (unless of course you have previously modified the code). I entered 0000, and my phone told me I was no "paired" again. When this happened, the little bluetooth battery icon up on top next to the battery icon appeared. It had not been showing previously, but of course, my phone and bluetooth were in the cradle then.

Although my bluetooth is working, and my phone is showing the bluetooth little icon up top (when both phone and bluetooth are removed from the cradle), when I click on settings, general, bluetooth, it STILL shows that little spinning dial, even though in the box below it says "paired". And I still don't show the bluetooth battery indicator on my phone when I first start it up (the big one). I am however, able to make calls using the bluetooth without problem.
I think that the bluetooth wheel always spins because it is constantly looking for new devices. At least that is what mine does and I have not updated yet.

The best way to say it is like this. If you do the update, once you sync the phone for the first time you will be on version 1.1.1 and only have access to what Apple put on the phone. Currently there is no solution for putting non-Apple ringtones back on the phone nor any 3rd party applications.

If this is not a situation you want please do not update!

update post post mortem

First off, yes, I updated losing my mods. I like to run current software, it's a flaw. Also i'm in my first 2 week period so if I brick it *whoosh* it goes back to store :)

Now I have it back up and running with my music and contacts back. NO ringtones or 3rd party apps (including ssh client and terminal which is a BIG reason i'm keeping this phone, for WORK)

I'm fairly confident that in a week the mods will be back.

To get it back restored and up took reboots, restarts of iTunes and being on my original activating computer.

My phone was not modded, and I lost my photos. My wifi key for work was blown away so now I have to go talk to the keepers of the company wifi about getting back on the network.

Worse part is that very little in the update does anything I really wanted Apple to fix. So tonight I get to locate my pictures and re-import everything again. Hardly worth all this effort or work really.

Acutally I work for jeep dealer, we add bigger tires to a lot of the jeeps before we sell them. We have the customer sign a document stating that chrysler may not honor the warranty because of the bigger tires. Actually any modifications that could affect the powertrain can void the warranty.
