Interesting NY Times article.

So let's see:
  1. Palm (Handspring) makes Treo
  2. Apple hires Mercer, learns & creates design processes
  3. Mercer leaves Apple
  4. Mercer founds Pixo
  5. Apple contracts Pixo to make iPod
  6. iPod evolves to iPhone, threatens Palm
  7. Mercer leaves Pixo
  8. Palm hires Mercer
Hmmmmm......

Certainly does seem that way, in spite of their trying to sound as blasé as possible.

Regardless of iPhone's ultimate success, Apple has really shown what kind of ripples can be created with true design innovation, a user-centric OS, and effective flexing of corporate brawn.

What I think is funny, is that he's saying that Apple won't do, what they do best. Simplify and the user interface, and amplify end-user experience. He even laughed at Apple for thinking they could do such a thing. They did it with personal computing, they did it with MP3 players, what the hell makes you think they can't do it with phones? He says "We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,"........don't you understand that's exactly what they plan to have happen? lol

They're stepping in, to do exactly what you haven't done yet!

Eevryone keeps predicting that this phone will be the end all of cell phones. I simply think it is the next evolution and other companies will simply follow suit. Look at HTC they are working on a full screen cellphone for 2 years. we shall see exactly what transpires with the iPhone.

palm themselves are having lots of trouble, namely with their OS. also problems with the product descriptions and all... overall wont be much of a fight i guess, between palm and Apple.

That's exactly the point. Meizu and others are iphone-"inspired" (to say the least), Palm is taking strategic steps to remain competitive, and the beat goes on. Member fnauta has written an interesting piece on this concept.

Palm just announced a switch to Linux. Their stability will improve. They always seem to have an issue with memory though. 8G in a tiny device will be tough to beat.

Yes, the long-anticipated Linux switch is official. It's a much more flexible OS core, and I'm expecting some very interesting things from Palmsource. They ain't dead yet but their first offering should be impressive or they will appear legacy.

is there a patent on the platform of the iPhone...and if it is, how long is it...cause if there's a patent on the platform, it will a lil' bit more than 2 yrs before other companies follow suit...
