Preserving Folders while updating operating system

Hi, I need to update my operating system on my iPhone. I am currently running version 4.1. A while ago a friend updated his operating system an he lost the organization of his apps within his folders. Essentially,all or most of his apps came out of his folders and he had to reorganize everything. Since I have hundreds of apps I am fearful of the upgrade. Is there anyway of insuring that this doesn't happen to me? Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are just updating I the new iOS you should be fine. However comma do a backup prior to updating. Of for some reason it doesn't work after you update you can do a restore from a back up and everything should be in place as it was

It shouldn't but there is no guarantee. Generally its caused by an app.
