I'm in the U.S and I've purchased every new iPhone within a couple of days of their launch. But AT&T expects me to pay $699 for the new iPhone 4 32GB. FULL PRICE!

07/01/07: Purchased original iPhone 8GB for $599 (no commitment)
07/15/08: Purchased iPhone 3G 16GB for $299 ($699 full price minus $400 for 2-year commitment)
07/19/09: Purchased iPhone 3GS 32GB for $499 ($699 full price minus $200 for add. 1-year commitment)
06/15/10: THEY WANT ME TO PAY $699 on 06/24/10, or $499 on 11/10/10, or $299 on 02/20/11 for the iPhone 4 32GB

I've never been late paying a bill (auto bill pay) and I'm a loyal AT&T customer, but this is the thanks I get from AT&T. I just don't understand how I'm not even eligible for the $200 discount like I was last year.

If someone from AT&T reads this, please explain or help me get this issue resolved so I can purchase the iPhone 4 32GB now for $499.

Have you tried upgrading on the website and see what prices you get? Where are you getting your info from? Have you talked with an AT&T rep?

I think it is because of the 7/19/09 purchase date of your 3GS 32GB. That didn't make you qualified for a full upgrade in 2010, in your case not until 2/20/11. Had you purchased your iPhone on iDay, June 19, 2009, you would have qualified for the full upgrade in December 2010 (18 months), and AT&T offered everyone who could be fully upgraded in 2010 the full upgrade six months early, or June 24, 2010. As it stands, you could only qualify for a partial upgrade on 11/10/10 and so AT&T didn't offer you an upgrade on June 24th.

I got the info by trying to Pre-Order on Apple's website for in-store pickup on launch day. So I called Apple and they directed me to AT&T. I spoke with an AT&T rep, then I spoke with the manager, but neither was willing to try and explain why. The manager sounded like he was having a stressful day and didn't even attempt to try and explain why I'm not eligible for any type of discount.

That just doesn't make sense. I purchased my 3GS 3 months ago, and I qualified for a partial discount ($399 for 16 gig). I would call again and ask.

By any chance, are you on a family plan? A co-worked is on a family plan and he qualified but his partner didn't.

What's your monthly bill before taxes?

The reason I ask is that the higher it is, the sooner your upgrade eligibility will tend to be over the period of your contract, as far as I know.

Mine is $93 before taxes ($40 + $30 + $20 messaging + $3 roadside assistance), and I got mine about a week after iDay 3. Mine was originally 12/01/2010 and I got bumped back to being eligible for full discount on iDay 4.

Seems like they try to lump people into certain pools of eligibility, as that's not the first time I've seen that exact eligibility date -- 2/20/2011. I don't know exactly what factors into your eligibility date, but there is a connection to monthly charges before taxes, because they have this extra discount thing going on for users of lesser phones that have higher bills.

I get a "National Account Discount" through the company that I work for, but I've been getting that since I purchased the 2nd iPhone in 2008. Before taxes, my bill is $74.99 and my discount is -$17.50. So you're probably right that my discount is having a negative effect on my upgrade eligibility.

But to be fair, it would be nice if AT&T would move up my PARTIAL UPGRADE ELIGIBILITY date since it falls in 2010. But it appears that they're only doing that for people who were completely upgrade eligible in 2010.

I'm in the same boat. FAN discount, monthly bill under $75, no upgrade subsidy until November (partial) and February (full).

And yes, I will be paying the $699 because I have to have it. Since there's no subsidy, I am assuming the upgrade eligibility dates won't change, so at least next year this won't be an issue.

My bill is $68 AFTER tax (I get a huge company discount), including unlimited text and data, and only got my 3GS 3 months ago, and still qualified for a discount. So I don't think bill amount has anything to do with it.

LOL Why would I flame? That was funny! I don't wish to be Steve Jobs, I just wish to have his money.

Unless AT&T can help me out by changing my date for a $200 subsidy, I'll probably have to sell my old iPhone(s). A coworker showed me Gazelle.com which will give you cash for your old iPhones. Here's how much they'll give me (all my iPhones are in "good" condition):
iPhone 2G 8GB = $83
iPhone 3G 16GB = $126
iPhone 3GS 32GB = $198
$407 for all three of my old iPhones!
Or, I might just choose to sell one or two of them on eBay.

I don't get all this either but of course I'm not complaining. I have 2 phones that are eligible for upgrade for full discount. My sons phone would have been up in december, But here's what I don't understand mine would have been up in october but I just upgraded to the 3gs on June 4, 2010 and it's still giving me the full discount.

I was going to just return it before the 30 days cause I figured I wouldn't have gotten the discount but when I checked it it said that I am eligible. It really doesn't matter cause the return of the 3gs will pay for both of them but I may get more for it on eBay.

That's pretty nifty...definitely take advantage of that full discount if you can, cause the 3GS is still worth $300-400 on eBay

I purchased my iPhone 3GS for $199.00 on July 7, 2009. I have had it for less than 1 year, but was able to pre-order the iPhone 4 at the local AT&T store for $199.00. I pay $60 a month for my basic service - 15% FAN discount + $30 iPhone data plan + 3 additional lines at $9.99 each (not iPhones) + $30 unlimited family messaging plan + taxes, etc. Once I receive my iPhone I will be selling my 3GS on e-Bay.
