question about password on my router (kinda iPhone related)

well ive always had WEP on my router so people cant steal my internet. but since i got my iPhone every now and then it will randomly ask me to type in the password. since its wep its like 20 random numbers and letters. i was wondering how do i put a password on my router thats a simple word like "iPhone" instead of a randomly generated number thing.

I use WPA and once you put in the password into iPhone, it will remember it.

WEP can be cracked easily according to a friend who does this type of work for the government. Intially, I used WPA and hex. Need to type 64 digits. I just typed 64 "1s". Then I changed, I believe to ASCII and use 26 digits. 26 "1s"

I also use WEP and my iPhone always remembers it, never asks for it again. That is weird.

For my router, I use the function the MAC filter that permits ONLY mac addresses that you enter in your router. An easier and a much more secure way to handle security. Then on your iPhone go to Settings/General/About and look for yourWiFi Address. Enter this into your router MAC filer and you are all set to go.

so far this sounds like the best option. i wanted an easy to remember password like "iPhone", because its easy and fast to type. and my iPhone is set to remember my password but like once a week it still asks me to type it in for some odd reason.

Just to clear up some misinformation. Though this is an easy basic way of blocking unwanted users from your router, this is in NO way secure. Everything sent to and from the router in this case would be in clear text, non encrypted, including the MAC address. It's very easy to sniff wireless traffic, grab a communicating MAC address out of thin air and clone it and have access to the router.

WEP at the very least encrypts traffic giving a would be bandwidth thief a little more trouble, but WEP is definitely a deprecated technology. Ideally you need to be using WPA or PSK authentication on the router if you are truly looking for a secure setup.

WickedZ Thank you for clearing up posting. For me in a suburban neighborhood it is much easier using my method.
