Quick restore question

I have a 3G unlocked on 6.15.00 and my phone has been acting up and I need to restore it as a new phone and re-jailbreak + unlock. Is it safe to do this? the only reason I need to jailbreak is for the unlock. i know its been said that you cant restore to stock firmware, but technically thats not really what im trying to do is it?
