I haven't tried the walkthrough posted at the beginning of this thread, but I did use this one and it worked like a charm for me:

http://www.iphonealley.com/news/guide-for-adding-custom-ringtones-and-tweaks-to-your-iphone

I have about 7 custom ringtones on there now. See my thread here for a list, and if you want any feel free to PM me:

http://forums.everythingicafe.com/threads/i-gots-me-some-ringtones.4949/

I highly recommend the walkthrough I posted about. If you follow it to the letter, you shouldn't have any problems at all... and you can still sync when you're all done!

That's the exact same walkthrough as this one:
http://www.hacktheiPhone.com/iPhone_ringtone_installation.html

I like the hacktheiPhone one better because it actually had pictures with it. This process is very easy, and even if I did mess up, I could just restore it back to normal. And also, I just changed my ringtone to Wonderwall by Oasis. I thought that may be better. I guess Dolly just doesn't have the magic she used to have :( lol.

Hah I didn't see that one on hacktheiPhone... my bad. Yes the pictures are nice, but it's mostly terminal commands so I don't mind the text. I have a unix/linux background so I feel pretty comfortable with just text, but I will send that walkthrough with pics to a few friends of mine so they can check it out.

Dolly Parton to Oasis, eh? Neither is my fav, although I will admit I have a special affinity for Wonderwall, as it was the first song I learned to play on guitar oh so many years ago :-P

Grats on getting the custom ringers... Have you messed around with changing the graphics or other alert tones at all?

No, but I think I may try that out next. I may add some Supermassive Black Hole to play when I receive a text message. Now wouldn't that be awesome...

Help

When I run jailbreak it returned an error "Problem with Ditto: 6".
Rnning Imac Intel
This happens when you are starting in recovery mode, you need to start in normal mode. The jailbreak program tells you when to switch to recovery mode. It does not tell you to do this the first time you run it, only after the first use.

keeps cycling through this how do i get to switch out of recovery after i hold power and home switch till its says connecting to iTunes running 7.3.1 cannot get it to go past this to get to next step help please

You have to press CTRL plus C when you see the recovery mode on the iPhone. Then, type ./jailbreak again, and it will boot up and stuff and work right. Follow the rest of the tutorial from there.

I could never understand people who want to use a song as a ringtone. Not only does it iritate people around you but it's unprofessional if using the phone at the workplace.

When this feature is officially added to the iPhone, I don't think it's one I'll really use. I like my cell phone to sound like one when a call comes in.
I TOTALLY agree. And those horrible midi clips are worse.

My ringtone is the old-style telephone. Love that sound.

I COMPLETELY understand. Even on The Office they make fun of Michael's custom ringtones on his cell phone. Many people consider them obnoxious.

My only problem with the ringtones are this: Custom ringtones don't seem to have the "volume leveling" that the ringtones and music played through the iPod program has.

What I'm saying is, custom ringtones are distorted and aggravating at best. Sure I can hear it, but what use is it if it sounds like it's going to break the speaker on the iPhone?
