We've been beating up on Apple for crippling the iPhone with its slowpoke EDGE network connectivity rather than 3G, but according to TheStreet.com, "people familiar with the production plans" are now saying that a 3G-equipped iPhone will be rolling out in the first quarter of next year. While Apple wouldn't confirm any of this, those same industry wags say the updated iPhone will also be packing GPS on board. That's when we're really going to want the remaining $500 back for our iPhone. Could this be planned obsolescence? So it goes. You can always tell the pioneers—they're the ones with arrows in their backs

Id be soooo upset if thats true. Because i use my Maps ALOT, and GPS would ROCK. Plus 3G would also be great.

They better have some sort of Upgrade program, lol.

With all due respect, you forgot to inlcude the actual response and quote from Steve Jobs where he said WE HOPE to see the 5+ battery life from 3G technology LATE NEXT year.

It is entirely possible that a 3G iPhone could be here in the Spring or it could be here tomorrow but I find it entertaining that so many people (not the poster but media outlets) go with the glossy instead of what came DIRECTLY from the horse's mouth.

I work in telecom and see devices that are and are not out every day and trust me, the battery life of a 3G phone is not impressive. It is not solely dependent on the 3G chipset being in the handset but is also dependent on the optimization of the network.

I have said over and over and over that when 3G works like it should in the iPhone, we will have it. Until then, we wait. Steve Jobs IS NOT going to release a multi-media phone with a batter life of 3-4 hours and he is a very smart man (IMO) for not doing so.

I must be one of the few that enjoys the battery life of the iPhone so much that having edge is entirely tolerable for me. I would not be happy if we got 3G along with a heavy slash in the battery life... It just wouldn't be worth it in my opinion...

I am in the same camp. Being around phones.. I can tell you that I want nothing to do with a 3G phone right now. I am not down with my battery going dead THE SAME day I charge it.

TRUST ME, when the carriers can make it work THEY WILL. The faster speeds means people will be on the internet more, downloading more stuff and HENCE the carriers making more on data.. I find it amusing that people think 3G is being held back for some mystery reason.

If I charge my battery overnight then it typically will last me the day.
Sometimes will be down to the 10% warning though.
This is with minimal Safari, text and IPod usage.

I've had many smart phones before I got my iPhone some of my previous phones to this one where a BlackJack, PPC-6700, Treo 650, Treo 600. I can tell you that when 3G speeds came into play with my PPC-6700 my battery life went downhill FAST. The older Treo's didn't have 3G and their batteries where pretty good. When Apple gets to the point where I can have 3G and a decent (5+ hours) battery life then it's ok, until that point I'll stick with Edge and having an AirCard to shove in my laptop.

yes~ 3G would be nice... but will AT&T charge iPhone user for $19.99 unlimited? If 3G service charges more then $19.99, let say $29.99 for 20MB, 39.99 for unlimited....will anyone use 3G or stick with EDGE?

I had a Treo 750 with 3G, and I had great battery life. In fact the battery lasted longer then the 680 did without 3G.

I wouldn't upgrade to a 3G model if it meant 40 a month for internet. Not worth it.

yeah I agree with you. Im happy with the current iPhone I use just about every feature on it.. if there ever is an update great if not no big deal for me. I don't need faster internet. GPS my car has that.

It does not matter, as soon as they come out with the 3G iPhone all the others will be launching the 4G, we will never be satisfied.

"Minimal usage"

Shouldn't you have that checked out? Sounds like you have a bad battery.

Don't most folks here get a whole day to day and a half with moderate usage?

Steve announced at the UK event this morning that there will be NO 3G until at least later in the year NEXT YEAR.
Not meant to sound like a sm@rt@ss but, being a "UK" event wouldn't any announcements be focused toward "UK" releases and release dates and such?

So maybe we get a "3G" version first, just as we have the original first.

Comments....?

Edge is fine. At least in Savannah GA where I am. If you can't wait 25 seconds (at the longest) for a page to load, WTF? I surf for HOURS at the bar and there's hardly a hit on my battery. 3G is nowhere near the network it is in Europe and it's a moot issue with me anyway..

Oh, EDGE in the ATL is working fine for me. I agree that most sites load fine. Even Rivals.com, which is graphically-intensive is not THAT bad and I am cool with it.
