I figured it out. I went into app setting and applied the "reset" option.

There should have been an easier way. When in the iPod app, under the progress bar (you may have to tap the screen to see it) there are 2 icons under it. One on the left for repeat, and one on the right for shuffle. I have a couple friends that accidentally activated the repeat when trying to slide the bar from the left.
Hitting the repeat icon (the one on the left that looks like an oval) once will have the same song repeat over and over till you stop it. Hitting it again will have it repeat only once- PER SONG. Hitting it a 3rd time turns it off.
Hope that helps.

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4. I have found numerous solutions online but the solutions don't seem to apply to my version of the software or something. I don't have an icon that I can select to have it repeat or not repeat. When I am in the screen with the album I have only the bar for volume (at the bottom) with a stop/go button in the middle and on either side forward or backward. At the top of the screen I have the icon for the album, when touched - brings me to the actual album cover with the exact same controls at the bottom. I can not get anything to play sequentially - no playlists, no albums and it's driving me batty. I have to select each new song manually. Can anyone help please?

Hawk - thank you for your patience - I see the progress bar -I have a progress bar. This is what I can do within that progress bar above the photo of the album cover of the song that's playing: I can touch a small icon on the right. That brings me back to to the playlist screen. In the center is the name of the actual song playing with other info. On the left is an icon with an arrow pointing to the left. That is all. At the bottom of the screen, I have a bar as well though (not seeing one on your screen shot) with the the options to stop the song or fast forward to the next song or restart the song etc. Am I in the wrong screen? Thank you for taking the time to try and help me with this. Carol

I'm not sure you are correctly identifying the bar at the bottom. The slider bar at the bottom under the back, play/pause, and forward buttons is a volume control slider. You want the slider on the top for the song progress. To get this to show up, you can tap once anywhere on the screen that is not an icon or control feature. I suggest tapping the center of the album artwork.
Now, take a look at my second pic again. If you tapped once on the artwork, you should now have a progress bar towards the top of the screen. On the left, UNDER the progress bar there is a small oval icon of 2 arrows chasing each other. If it is blue, then repeat is on. If it is blue with a circle on the left side that has a 1 in it, then it's set to repeat every song once. If it is white, then repeat is off.
To toggle between each option, you have to tap that oval icon once to get to the next option. So if the icon is just blue, you tap once to get to "repeat one time" and then tap again to turn repeat off.

So, tap the screen anywhere to toggle between seeing the progress bar, and not seeing it. You want to see it.
Then check the oval icon UNDER the bar on the left, and if it is blue, then it is on repeat, and will continue to play the same track over and over. If you tap it, you will then be in "repeat once" mode, where it will repeat every song once. Tap it again and the icon should be white, meaning that repeat has been turned off.

OMGOSH! Hawk - THAT'S IT! I have never seen that bar before! Even though I have had the phone for almost a year - I've never used it to play music. Recently I began working out and walking around a track and decided to try it - and now you've solved the problem of it looping the same song over and over! It was the need to do that double tap (I know you told us to that before right here but I must have been in the wrong screen because before it didn't work). THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thank you for your patience and your tenacity.

No problem! When working with the iPhone, it's sometimes hard to grasp a concept that seems strange when you have been staring at a particular screen for a while. I just needed to break it down so you knew exactly where I was, and how I got there.
Enjoy!

Oh and Hawk - there are creams for that skin condition...;)

Thanks again! Went for my walk and the songs played perfectly. That was really driving me batty - and you were a tremendous PATIENT help. And getting through to Apple is a nightmare! Have a great week!

Dear Hawk - I have just gone through the rather painful process of registering with this forum to say thankyou - I write software for a living and even allowing for the fact that I should be able to work this one out, its been driving me batty for weeks. Many thanks :)

Your every welcome! And stick around the forums, there is a virtual ton of other helpful/useful information here. I've been a member since August '07. I continue to contribute to the site to help make it the best iPhone forum out there (which it is already!)

That is correct, but apparently in earlier builds of iOS, the status bar up top didn't automatically show, just the volume slider. That is why people were having problems.

Hawk, thanks from me as well - I had this issue on my iPhone 3GS ever since upgrading to IOS6. I signed up here today to be able to thank you :) Nowhere else online so far have I found a decent solution/explanation. One referred to the "scrubber" on the screen. (The what?) Anyway, glad you're here.:D

Your welcome. Yeah, the "scrubber" isn't the best name, but its called that because you can put your finger on it and "scrub" forwards or backwards in the song.
I prefer calling it the progress bar. Makes more sense to me.
