#StoryCircle is a growing tradition at Google+ - it was a long-standing one at FriendFeed though under a different name / hashtag.
The idea is simple - you share a story about yourself that the rest of the community doesn't know well. It can be on any topic you like.
Anyway, I don't think it would draw any patent lawsuits if we tried out something similar here at EIC. Here's the one I posted at Google+ today:
Just over a year ago, our long-time family pet - a beautiful and ever-so-kind hearted white Labrador - passed away. The events leading up to his passing and his actual final day taught me a lot about the kindness of veteranarians. Or at least about the immense kindness of our local vet.
Newton (our Lab) had a big cancerous tumor that was both killing him and rapidly making his final days far from comfortable. He had trouble breathing, eating, even drinking water. In the weeks and months leading up to his death, we had numerous visits to the vet's office and a specialist hospital.
The vet's had once been a place he enjoyed going to, but in his final weeks it was a place he was terrified of and never had a comfortable moment in.
So when the time came for him to be euthanized, though my wife and I had never even thought to ask, our local vet volunteered to come to our house to administer the final shot. We accepted immediately of course.
It meant that his last half hour was spent with us petting him and telling him what a wonderful dog he was. Even the vet had lots of kind words for him, as she knew him very well - from his best of days and his worst. I was holding his head when the injection was given and as he passed. I helped carry him out to the vet's van.
It was hard stuff to do, and we were broken hearted about it of course, but it was so, so much better than it would have been at the vet's office.
Still miss him tons. Love the fact that my daughter remembers him as the best dog ever. And love that we now have another big, big-hearted Lab who goes to the same wonderful local vets.
