Does anyone know of a way to store about 2 pages of text in my iPhone. In case an emergency I am required to report certain data to the authorities for my company. I would like to store this information in my iPhone so that I will always have it with me. I did e-mail the info to myself and this method works quite well however, the e-mail resides at the bottom of my e-mails, is time consuming to retrieve and will eventually go away. I thought of scanning the documents as a photo then storing them in my photos (haven't tried that to see how it actually works). I really would somehow like to store the information in the notes section of my iPhone (without typing of course). Thanks!

You could add and save it in your "Notes" app. :) This actually syncs with iTunes, too. ;)

Err, it's "backed up" in iTunes, at least.

The notes section seems like the logical choice, although I don't think you're going to be able to get around typing it all in. Although you can convert a note to an e-mail, AFAIK there's no way to back out an e-mail to the notes application.

Use the notes field in a contact. Easily can store that much text (and much more), and syncs to the iPhone just fine (at least from Outlook, I use Windows).

That's what I do...I make a dummy contact, then put the info in the "Notes" field of the contact. I can tell you, though, that Outlook 2003 running on Windows XP *does* have a limit to the amount of text that it will store in the notes field, and it is much, much less than two pages of text. So what I had to do was to create several dummy contacts (Company Info 1, Company Info 2, Company Info 3, etc.), and put sequential portions of the info into each dummy contact.

Pain in the ass, right? I love my iPhone, and I won't go back to my Q or my Treo, which had there own problems...but there is *plenty* of room for improvement with updates on the iPhone. I'm looking forward to making a great device even greater. In the meantime, I'm compromising with kludge workarounds.

Outlook

Thanks all--I guess one of the problems I have here is that (as of yet) I have not used MS Outlook. My contacts are in CardScan which does not in itself sync with iPhone. So, I just typed in the 100 or so important contacts that I needed for now. If I do decide to Sync with Outlook, will it remove the contacts that I have manually entered into my iPhone from the phone?

I run Outlook 2003 and I can say without question that I have notes fields within contacts that are much larger than 2 pages. Same thing on the two other machines I have running Outlook 2003.

I just added a test contact with 84,971 characters in its note (measured it in Word). No matter how you define a "page" it can't be more than 42,000 characters! I basically used copy-and-paste within a contact (in Outlook) to make a large note. I picked a contact that already had a fairly large note (18,274 characters) and copied its note, repeatedly, into a new contact. I don't know what the limit is either, but I do know that that wasn't it (it could still hold more).

Plus, the entire note propagated to my iPhone on the next sync. You can't see the whole note (if it's very large) when just just viewing the contact on the iPhone, but if you go into edit mode on the note it is there. The test account's note (with 84,971 characters) took a little time to display in edit mode, but every single character was there (added "This is the end!" while in Outlook so that I could easily tell it wasn't truncated).

I think that if you can't add a large note in Outlook, that it is something to do with your install. Perhaps you added some sort of other syncing solution, prior to the iPhone, for a device with limited note size, and it made sure that Outlook would follow it. Regardless it is not normal in my experience. I just RDP'd into 5 different PCs, all running Outlook 2003 and I created very large contact notes in all of them (same thing with one machine that had Outlook 2002 instead).

in using the notes section

Okay,
If I use .mac account and the Address Book on my MacBook, I can create a new contact, say given name of "Curriculum". Then you are saying that in the notes section of the contact I can paste my information ( lengthy) and when I sync with iPhone, the notes will be there at all times. Am I understanding correctly.

That's the idea, yes. But I haven't used it with a Mac, only Outlook on a PC. Still, I can't imagine that it wouldn't imagine it would work on a Mac too.
