It is metal
The reason your engraver should be qweezy about the iPhone is that if he misspells somthing he has to buy you a new $1,00 iPhone and good luck finding one. And so because of the risk and nerves it will take to engrave these iPhones he honestly should charge more. I am charging $20 for most iPods and $50 for iPhone.
If he is nervous, move on. Find an experienced confident engraver. My riskiest job was an $86,600 Cartier watch. Good luck finding another one of those also!
If you happen to be in Atlanta I'll engrave it for you. Check out examples of my work at iEngrave.net
Your iPhone will be made out of the same material as the iPods, aluminum. I've engraved over a thousand iPods! They engrave very nicely, but they are made of a very dense aluminum on the back so most engravings will just barely scratch the surface. I personally make several passes with a spinning diamond tipped engraver which gives a brilliant look to the surface. Much better look than the laser etching. And just so you know, no engraving will void your warranty as long as they don't damage the device which is not likely.I always assumed my iPod was metal as it responded as if it were magnetic, but the local engraver gave me a hard time saying that he was going to charge more, and wanted me to waive any damage he might cause by putting my name and number on my iPod.
Am I going to have this problem with my iPhone?
