Is there a way to set the phone to check my e-mail from 6AM to 6PM? I had it set that way with my treo and it was great because it saved batteyr life. Also, I wanted to know if there was a way to manually sync the e-mail. For example, let's say I send an e-mail and I want it to be sent right away and not wait until it automatically syncs the messages. Is there a way I can manually press a button to sync the folders? Thanks in advance.

No. You'll have to manually go into the Settings widget and set the email check from whatever time period you use during the day to "never".
Sending a mail seems to send immediately rather than waiting for a timed check. Also, it seems to check for new mail every time you enter the Mail widget in addition to the timed checks you defined in Settings.

Correct, each visit to Mail automatically checks mail and tries to send mail that couldn't be sent before (placed in the Out box). As far as I can tell, there's no way to turn this off, but I wish there was. I don't understand why Apple didn't make that optional. There are many times I want to check something in one of my iPhone email accounts, but NOT check mail first. Or, if I'm overlooking something obvious and there is a way to go into the Mail app without it checking mail, please let me know.

Why do you care if it checks mail when you go there or not? It doesn't stop you from doing anything, it just does a check in the background.
It assumes that if you're going into your mail, you want to see the latest mail (which makes sense, since you're probably not going in there to read much in the way of old mail, since it only loads the latest 25, or whatever limit you chose, messages).

This is a type of option I'd like to see, too. I get far too many automated emails from my servers and don't mind knowing about them through the day but wouldn't like to have to go into the settings and turn off the 15-minute check every day before going to bed. Blocking out a section of time makes sense.
What, are you fishing for a rant with those reasons? You won't get it from me, but I will explain why I think the option should be given.
I care because it suits my purposes and the way that I work and would like to use my iPhone. I also believe it should be the default setting, and only check email if I tell it to. That goes for everyone else I've spoken to about this. Forcing email to download on a user that may not want to download email just to read an email already there (without having to manually turn the accounts off each time) is a bad choice. And having it "assume" it knows what I may or may not want to do is exactly what is wrong with it.
Simply having the option to turn "off" automatic checking of email is hardly a major feature request, and I'll be shocked if Apple doesn't add it in a near term software update.
