Signing up for a non iPhone data plan

I bought an already activated iPhone off craigslist, the guy activated it and signed up for a 2 year contract, but then didn't want it, and then he sold it to me, but he took out his sim. So all the features on it work usin wi-fi, except the phone feature. Can i, using the hack to use my existing cingular SIM (no 2 yr contract) but then can I call AT&T and get a data plan for a "regular" phone ($20), and can I safely use that on my iPhone with unlimited use and not signing up for 2 year contract? let me know what you guys think.

that's what i'm doing. i'm an "add a line" to my gf's family plan. they don't have data or text, but i don't use either one, so it's ok.

Once you get your old SIM working on the iPhone, call AT&T up and just simply ask the rep if you can add the unlimited iPhone data plan to your current plan without extending your contract. If Yes, that's great, if no, try again. Sometimes reps are by the book, sometimes they aren't, it's all luck

with me, i'm around wi-fi all the time, so i actually called the international line and had them disable my GPRS (data/EDGE), you can read all about that here:

Did you ever consider, Pay as you go? You can get a prepaid or Go plan. No contract, yet use all the iPhone features. The iPhone is much to great a phone to cripple any of the features, by obtaining service the "Backdoor" way..M

Bypass AT&T iPhone Activation and still get an iPhone Data Plan

Has anyone actually tried and successfuly gotten the iPhone data plan added after hacking their iPhone? ideally i'd like to bypass activation so i don't have to re-extend my contract, but i want the $20 data plan on a post paid family plan.

It worked for me! Now I have the iPhone 200 Data Plan and Visual Voicemail without extending my contract.

When I got my iPhone I bypassed activation and use it with my old SIM card. In order to get the iPhone 200 Data Plan ($20) I did exactly what chenyichung described above - I called customer service until someone said yes - it only took two tries.

I called customer service and the first rep said no. I called back and the second one said "ok." The rep pulled up my account, and it would not let the iPhone Data Plan be added since my account still showed my old phone. So I gave them my iPhone's IMEI number. They verified that the IMEI number was for an iPhone, updated my account to show the iPhone, and added the iPhone 200 Data Plan.

Before you call you should write down your iPhone's IMEI number - on your iPhone dial *#06# and the number that pops up is your IMEI number.

Simple as that!

I did this on my v. 1.1.2 phone, so YMMV.

Please Help!

I have an iPhone 3G which I got used for $100 off craigslist. I worked through the hacks until I was able to connect to a GoPhone account. Now its $60/month for unliminted minutes (att) but without data.

Heres the specifics:
- My phone will not recognize wifi signals and thus is unable to connect to the internet via broadband
- ATT does now offer a somewhat new plan for GO phone, pay as you go DATA plus MIN.
- For $75 instead of $60 I can get data (200mb a month I believe)...

I want to be able to use GPS on my phone, and I would like to be able to download apps like everyone else... and I cant do any of that currently.

My requests:
- Please show me how to make the data plan work so that I can access data
- Please help me diagnose WHY my phone wont recognize or access data from wifi connections
- Please let me know of any other service providers who will give me a better deal on data/min or will provide me with unlimited data (are you saying I can ask ATT for this?)
