I haven't had any problems breaking. I don't use it much. Usually keep it on vibrate. But if you have a 3G the button is metal. Not easy to break. I don't think the First Gen ones were easy to break either.

So far I've only heard of 1 person having this problem, perhaps on this forum I don't recall. He said it broke the first day he got it but he decided to keep the iPhone until things cooled down.

That guy must have used a screw driver or something stupid to switch it from ring to vibrate. No need to worry they are pretty well built.

No screwdriver and no powerlifter involved to break the button.

What the problem with the poster was, was that the button is actually glued onto the actual electronic switch on the phones. He merely snapped the button off of the glue. Sure you aren't going to break metal, but beware, you will be able to detach it if you have a false sense of the button's invulnerability.

I have a Sena case and everytime i install or remove from case it turns the vibrate on. This has nothing to do with breaking, but well see

You heard wrong. It's fine.
You didn't hear wrong are you are RIGHT

I am on my second 16GB iPhone and both of them have had the silent button fall off. Both of them!

All I was doing was operating the switch and it came off in my fingers. Not Happy at all. Going back to store now in a really bad mood.

Yep, I also had my silent button pop off. I got my iPhone last Friday, and on Monday, I came into work, and went to put my phone on silent, and the button just popped right off. Upon further inspection, it was clear that my vibrate button was rather stiff to move. Got my phone replaced, and no problems since, silent button works great now!

The problem i'm hearing is that if your silent button has a "stiff" feel to it when sliding it, thats when people report that it pops off. My first phone had that feel to it, but this one slides really easily.

Just got back from the O2 Shop in Trowbridge.

After lots of faffing about waiting for the manager he eventually processed me and passed me over to the shop assistant. I pointed out the button problem and his reply was:

"You cant exchange it if it is damaged"!

Arrrggghhhhh...which is the only reason I was exchanging it. The manager then had a look and agreed that I cant exchange my faulty phone if it is damaged...ie: The button missing....Comical to say the least.

Well needless to say I wasn't going anywhere without a new phone and after a "don't talk to me in that tone" comment from the manager I took up the role as angry customer and presented him with the web evidence that it was a problem. Shock, horror, he turned all nice and gave me my third iPhone. Soooo angry though. As a consumer am I meant to be thick as shite and except poor quality service? The iPhone does have a dodgy button. That is a FACT.

I will keep this forum posted if it happens again. Fingers crossed it wont.

he speaks the truth, it's just glued on.

iPhone 3g in bits.

That guy must have used a screw driver or something stupid to switch it from ring to vibrate. No need to worry they are pretty well built.
Ok so I've changed my iPhone 3g twice already due to this problem. And guess what the little button just came off my 3rd one 5 minutes ago while switching to silent in my first meeting of the day. Strangely i don't use a screw driver to perform the switch but opt normally for the thumb on my left hand. But I guess I do use the button a few times a day (I hear you recoil in shock at my stupidity).

Perhaps I have very strong thumbs.

The good thing is that Apple seem to be willing to change my iPhone 3g at the drop of a hat (in the Apple Store on Oxford Street erm... London, although they won't change it through the service vendors -O2 - in the UK) although both times I've changed so far the guys in the shop have denied any knowledge of the buttons dropping off but act like its the most normal thing and change me up without question.

I have a lot of iPhoned up friends and have been told of 4 other button drops without asking. So not an epidemic but not isolated.

Oo also I just remembered. An early subsciber friend of mine told me his button was "wonky" - as in no longer straight WRT the phone when in non-silent mode. My second phone also suffered from this although it was very slight and you had to look hard to see that the button wasn't square with the face and cover.

Anyone know a way to reduce the chances of this happening (apart from getting wimpy with my thumb)? A little worried that firing vaseline into the whole to make it less sticky might just invalidate my warrantee.

Well this happened to me tonight. :( I use mine about twice a day and it's never felt too stiff but it is a little stiff. Tonight I turned it on silent mode for class and after class I went to flip it back only to discover my button was missing. It sat on my desk the whole time and I couldn't find the button anywhere. :( What really ticks me off is I have this thing protected and I take really good care of it unlike my 2G iPhone. I have a good case, a good screen protector, and I never drop it and tonight it breaks from less than normal use. :( I've had it for almost 2 months now.

Here's a couple pics:

Yeah it really seems like Apple dropped the ball on this seemingly insignificant feature. It must be a much cheaper plastic than the V1, because I've never heard of this happening to anything but the 3G.

Can you still use it with a fingernail?

I can but it's a pain in the butt.

From reading the Apple Support page this looks like the sort of thing that would be covered under the 1 year warranty. The site says to contact Apple Tech Support or to take it to an Apple Store. Unfortunately I don't have one nearby. :( They also say "Note: AT&T stores do not provide service." So it looks like I might have to contact ATS and go without an iPhone if they decide I can mail it in for them to fix it. Not a happy camper. :(
