I agree--headset volume is terrible!
I have several phones, one of which is the Nextel i880 so, of course, to compare it to the volume of a Nextel phone is unfair.
But the volume on my iPhone is horrible. It's not even as loud as the mid-range level on other phones.
I have two friends with iPhones and they say the same thing as well.
I REALLY hope someone can fix this!

Id be more than glad to edit it if I could actually get iPhoneInterface to work. I get jailbreak to work but when I "ls" I don't see any /Applications/ folder. 
Low volume
Don't lose sight of the other problem here. Ringer and alert volumes. These are just as important since if you can't hear your phone ringing it doesn't matter if the earpiece volume is too low. Personally, my earpiece and speaker volume are plenty loud, guess I got a later version. However with the phone in my pocket I can barely hear the ringer, and that's in a quiet setting.

my problem is just the opposite, the ringer & alerts on my phone are PLENTY loud! When my phone rings or alerts everyone can hear it all over the house! I had to turn it down because it wakes my 9 mo. old son up and is WAY too loud at work or in public. It rang in the mall the other day and just echoed on the food court (but then when I answered it , as usual, I couldn't hear ANYTHING the person was saying!)
It makes me sick that I paid $650 for a phone that I can't really use as a phone!
For those with soft volume, check to make sure that the Volume was not "pre-set". I did this to myself, trying to keep the volume at a reasonable level because initially it blew me outta my chair. Silly me.
Go to Settings, iPod, and Volume limit. For those that cannot hear, turn it up. better to have too much and you can turn it down, than to have not enough with no way of turning it up.
the Volume limit does not just affect the iPod app either. It affects everything through the ear piece in the phone, as well as the ear buds. It didn't seem to affect the bottom speaker nearly as much, but it does.

My Volume limit is all the way up. That is one of the first things I did when I got it. Wanted my iPod as loud as possible.
I did not know that it controlled the earpiece volume as well. But it doesn't really matter I guess because mine is all the way up and has been since day one.
