I've been with Rogers for 7 years, and the connection kept on dropping, the reception was never more than 3 bars (usually 1 bar at home), and when I phoned them to inquire about the iPhone 5, the customer service specialist claimed that I failed to give her my proper name, so she couldn't even check my upgrade eligibility. The reason I have decided to upgrade instead is due in fact that they are no longer offering unlocked iPhone 5's at the Apple Store (but only online), and I want to get one on launch day. So today, I drive to the Rogers store, and present my ID, tell them my account information, and my name is correct on the account! I'm a bit peeved, so I storm out of the store, and then I look up to see the "Bell" (another carrier) store right across the hallway in the mall. I decide to walk in and inquire about a month-to-month plan, asked about if it was possible to get a plan immediately not on contract, then come in at the end of the week and grab an iPhone 5 subsidized. "Totally possible". So I go ahead and get the month-to-month plan, port my number and swap the SIM in my iPhone to theirs (my phone is factory unlocked), and I instantly have incredible reception! 5 bars solid, not even bouncing between 4 and 5 at all. I was super impressed at this. Then the guy gets to talking about upgrading to the iPhone 5:
Him: "So what color and size are you getting?"
Me: "I'd like a black 64GB, I'll take white too, but it must be at least 64GB, as I have over 40GB worth of data on my current iPhone."
Him: "Oh, 64GB? Piece of cake, no one's really ordered that size and we have an abundance coming in, so we'll just hold one for you on the 21st and you can come in anytime on that day to sign a 3-year contract and have it in your hands!"
Me: "Oh, well...wait, what? You'll just hold one for me?"
Him: "...yes?"
Me: "You mean, no reservation? I mean this is days after the pre-order has happened and you can guarantee me an iPhone 5 on the 21st without me having to die in 28 degree weather overnight? Really?!"
Him: "Yep, no problem."
Me: "Wow, I love this carrier already."
Back at home, my reception is still a solid 5 bars, when my old carrier was only 1! I've never seen my old carrier go anywhere above 4 anywhere in the city, but to not see this one drop below 5 yet is amazing. And the service I received was on par with their reception too!
Now for that $500+ early termination fee from my old carrier, that's another story. Oh well, I'm still happy!
