  • Log in to your gmail account.
  • Click settings in the upper right corner
  • Click Filters
  • Click New Filter
  • Type me in the From Field
  • Click next step
  • Check the first box 'Skip the Inbox (Archive it)'
  • Check 'Also apply filter to XXXX
  • Click Create Filter
Now when the CC to the inbox is sent it will get filtered out. If it does not make the inbox, it wont make it to your iPhone.

Hard to tell when you click the Gmail button on the iPhone to setup the account but it is actually setting it up as a POP3 account not HTTP like in your browser.

With POP enabled on your Gmail account you will always get the CC to inbox. This is a feature according to Gmail.

From the Gmail help:

When you (me:the iPhone) enable POP, all messages are downloaded to your client, except for Spam, Trash, and Chats. If you don't want messages that you send from the web interface downloaded to your mail client's inbox, we suggest creating a filter within your client (me: build this filter as per above steps).

This is working for me and few others.

The archiving isn't working for me, but if I select 'delete it' that works fine. So if anyone else runs into that problem they can use that.

sweet..

I did this, but it showed up in my inbox anyway. Hmm.

It works for me....thanks! :)

I told this to my friend and he actually put "me" in the field, rather than his first name "Steve" that shows up on his outgoing emails.

The "me" term didn't work for him...putting his actual name did..so not sure, if you are doing that, but just thought I would mention that.

Ya I've been debating which I need more. I can always just delete the extra emails, but not having the ability to forward to myself could be a problem.

I think the cc feature is regardless of the POP being enabled or not. Seems to me it's because of the threaded structure of the Gmail's system. What's funny is on my Blackberry an email originating from within my Gmail account or the Blackberry itself did not generate another email to the Blackberry. But that is a WHOLE different animal. BB's are real time email machines. That's why they're so popular with the businesss world. My Gmail would come into my BB almost instantaneously. It was INCREDIBLE. I think the real solution for this would be to get a Gmail interface that interacted with mail as if you were logged in on the web. At the very least, to act as if you were creating a POP account in Entourage or Firebird.

In the meantime, this solution works for me!

You can still do this it just wont be in your inbox. Just search in advance search for the email, or it should be the top item in your trash folder.

You can still send yourself stuff.

Yes, but I think he meant and I certainly did to my phone or to my mail app.

My BB did the same thing and quite a few people said their Treo did it too. I agree about how amazingly quick the gmail to BB was though, it always made me wonder how it could download it that fast but how slow Edge was.

Oh well, hopefully this close partnership Apple and Google have seemed to formed will bring us a solution.

Send it to the iPhones' email address.

Like 3055551212@att-wireless.net
or whatever it is. I am not sure since the name change. But all Cingular mobile devices have an email address.

I am just not sure of the format.

I found this but it may be old.

Cingular Wireless

Format: 1 + 10-digit cell phone number @ mobile.mycingular.com
Example: 13335551111@mobile.mycingular.com
AT&T PCS

Format: 10-digit cell phone number @ mobile.att.net
Example: 3335551111@mobile.att.net

what if someone replys to an email you sent..that wont make it to your inbox because that thread has an email from you in it filtered to archive it or delete it. It cant filter out parts of the thread...just the whole thread itself. this is not a proper solution in my opinion, but thanks for the suggestion.

The filter is only looking at the from filed which would contain the email address of the person who replied to you.

This has not been my experience. My iPhone and my Mail client (MacOS X Mail) download every message from ALL MAIL in gmail even if they have been read already, and even if they are never in the inbox.

It would only work, for me, if I trashed every email from myself. I don't want to do that, because then I have no record of sent mails on my desktop client.

Maybe Gmail will offer free IMAP Push email soon....

Can you buy Push IMAP Yahoo email? I mean so it works on a Mail client on a computer (besides iPhone) so you don't have to use their webmail interface?

Go to your POP3 setting at gmail and change the POP setting from all mail to 'from now on'

Then it will stop sending all those old emails to your iPhones inbox.

That stopped it from sending me the old emails, but every new email i sent gmail would send me a copy. I had to set up a filter to delete all email messages incoming from "me".

This does work, but there's an issue if you also use Outlook with GMail... you won't get the sent message to download into Outlook either. This is a problem for those of us who keep all our old emails in Outlook as a backup.

i sure hope this works. ive asked this question 3 times on here since yesterday and no one answered me. thanks a bunch.

EDIT: just tried & TOO BAD it doesn't fix the situation on my end. i deleted my email accounts, fixed the settings you described, and then re entered my email accounts....now my iPhone email boxes are full of old emails ive already read and archived. i don't know what the F is going on. it makes no sense. iPhone should ONLY download unread messages. anyone have any other ideas? please!
