Sound quality of calls - hissing sound

Does anyone else notice the background hissing/noise when on a call with the iPhone? I always hear it regardless of whether I call another mobile number or a land line. When I stop talking and/or the other person talks, it goes away. If no one talks for a moment it returns. It almost seems as if it's a noise gate opening and closing or something. It's very annoying.

So far I've only made calls from my home location - maybe it has something to do with that?

I would like to know from others, do you notice this hissing background noise on your calls? What is the quality of the calls on your phone?

I am coming over to AT&T from T-Mobile and my calls were usually very quiet. I am just wondering if this is a) something that is inherent in the AT&T mobile system; b) something that is related to my particular phone and/or location; or c) something that no one else would notice but I do because I recently switched service. Thanks.

I've noticed this before on my old moto phone on ATT. Havn't noticed it all that much with my iPhone though.

I went to the AT&T store yesterday and had them check it out. The sales guy told me it happens to him too on occasion and said it depends on your location. We tested out the phone at the store and the call he made to my phone was crystal clear. Glad it's not my phone.
