MacBook Pro Start up disk full warning

Hi all. My friend has a MBP and had a full disk. When starting it warned him that it was nearly full. On deleting 40 gig of movies etc he still has the warnings and the disk utility shows the disk is full on the pie graph and even so after restarting several times. Any help appreciated

Don't want to be too basic, but after doing the deletions did he go and empty the Trash?

Yep he did that. He also deleted some photos and emptied trash on iPhoto's too. Thanks Lon

Is he running Lion OS?

This exact thing happened to me, turns out it was my hard drive failing. Finally one day it refused to boot. If it hasn't completely died yet get it replaced soon so you don't lose all the data on the drive.
