Strange Battery Problem with 2.1

My battery is behaving very strange after updating to 2.1. So far since updating 2.1 this is what has happened:

1st time - I charged to 100% left it on standby overnight, all apps completely closed. I didn't use it until the next evening when I tried to turn it on it didn't respond. So I held down the power button and it gave me the no battery icon. I checked usage and it was way up around with the standby time, which I thought was strange because I definitely hadn't used it for that long. I didn't bother to screenshot it; I just dismissed it as a freak thing and I did a full charge (thus a cycle which should calibrate battery indicator).

2nd time - I used the iPhone the evening after I did the full cycle, and when I went to bed it had about half a charge and 2h. 21m. usage (see 1st pic). I wake up but I didn't use it until a slightly after 4:00 PM. So again I try to turn it on but it won't respond, I hold down the power button and once again I see the no battery icon. I plug the iPhone in the charger and immediately after it turned on I took a screenshot of the Usage stats (see 2nd pic) and as you can see it has 18h. 35m. of usage.

So I'm thinking something is running in the background, but I don't know what, I even did a hard reset after my full cycle to try and eliminate any background apps (or whatever it may be).

I know people are having cases of background processes running down their battery, but this has happened twice in a row, with a hard reset in between and a full cycle to make sure my indicator was accurate.

Tips, suggestions, conclusions? What do you think?

I did another loose test:

9:06 AM: I took a picture of my usage (see pic, take note of battery level) then put the iPhone to sleep.

6:13 PM (same day): I wake my iPhone and I immediately get the 10% warning, and my usage had changed and my data, so I suspect something was accessing data (see pic).

I had Push on, but I only received 2 or 3 simple text mails, but that doesn't explain the data usage. I mean 2-3 text emails can't equal 1.7 MB?

This is really starting to get frustrating. I'm going to do a hard reset, but if it persists then I'm going to try a full restore.

PS. I read a story where someone had the same problem, they restored but then the same problem occurred. If it was a software issue, wouldn't a full restore solve this problem? So does this mean it's something hardware related? I can't see how, but if it were hardware then it should disappear with a restore so... what is it?

this has been discussed at length in ages threads on here. I have been having the same troubles. I have done a full restore as a new phone, turned off push and location services. I believe something happened to email with the update. I have turned all my email accounts to manually retrieve. Haven't had a problem yet. I did not have these problems before 2.1. This is not a hardware problem in my opinion

Now I have a feeling my battery may be faulty... but I don't know how this could just happen after updating the firmware.

The reason I say this is because the results of my tests. I did a full cycle, which many people have reported to increase their battery life and make the battery indicator more accurate.

Right after I unplugged my iPhone after a full cycle:

I first started browsing the interent via 3G for 23 m. and my battery indicator already was showing battery loss.

I continued to browse and after 38 m. my battery was already about a quarter gone! I couldn't believe it.

I then had it on standby for about 5 hours and I did lose a bit of battery. Then I used it for 27 m. of only music usage my battery just nose dived again.

Then again after another 17 minutes or so of music usage and 1 short video the battery nosedived again.

So now it doesn't seem to be a case of background apps making my battery drain but just a bad battery (I think). I'm curious what you think about this.

Im having the same problem. I think its where we are located. Yours seem to be acting the same as mine with the 3g bars. It's struggling to be stable and this is whats causing the big drain. When i first loaded 2.1 i got almost 6 hours of usage at my work with full stable 3g connection. this weekend im home and can barely pass 3 hours of usage (3g bars constantly moving fighting to stay at 3g not edge). i will try same test at work again tomorrow and verify this.

I am having these battery draining issues with the 3G antenna set to off. I rarely ever use it because I live in a EDGE area. There is something else going on here other than 3G

I am continuing to get this problem, so I am in the middle of doing a 100% fresh restore. I even deleted my own copy of 2.1, so iTunes is downloading it again.

I'll report back once I try the battery out, after the restore.

have you tried turning your email to only manual settings? restore did not work for me. since I turned of push and fetch for my email accounts the problem has stopped. I turned push back on and the problem returned. Let Apple know about your problem. I am sure they will blame it on a hardware problem, but its the only way to get their attention

I've had a weird battery problem, the large green battery on the locked screen while charging says 3/4 full... But the upper right battery icon will have the plug symbol, as if fully charged... I unplug it and it's at 3/4.... WTF?

For the first time ever, I had an incorrect battery reading. Must be something with the software. Earlier in the morning I did notice that it didn't take much time to charge my battery to full.

I went out. Through listening on the iPod and doing a lot of browsing and even sitting through a whole movie, it seemed like my battery was full the whole time. Then, I came upon the bug where I cannot install an update - the button said "installed." So, I knew I had to reboot.

After I rebooted my battery was at 10%! :( Lucky I had my portable charging system.

I'm starting to get frustrated here.

I did a full fresh restore, and I thought this solved things (as I turned Push off as well) as my first charge of battery went for a long time.

Then on my second charge, the battery is just as bad as before. It just seems to be draining a way with hardly and usage, except it says I've used it for over 11 hours. And I've probably used it for 1 hour of some web browsing and 30 m. of music. And I've already hit the 20% warning.

Again this is after a fresh restore, with Push off.

What's happening here? Faulty battery?

I called Apple about this and they thought it was a hardware problem. I find this hard to believe considering I only started having problems after 2.1. Anyway, they sent me a new phone with 2.02 loaded on it. Everything works great so far. I think I will leave it this way until they get this problem fixed. Long backup times are better than decreased battery life. Make sure to call Apple. They need to know this going on and get it fixed

my batttery Is great I got 6 hours and 30 minutes of usage yesterday. All of my usage was wi-fi browsing and testing with about 30 minutes of phone usage. I have everything turned off except wi-fi and push email with the screen brightness about a 1/4 of the way up.

I found that the problem I was having was the phone running too hot, when it runs too hot even if it's not fully charged it will stop charging to prevent it getting even hotter.
