I just want to know who has tried or thought about doing the custom ringtone mod. I wanna hear some success stories or brick stories, please be specific on your experience on doing these types of mods on your phone, like have you done it before on another phone or if you're just a programmar, etc. I'd also like to see how many people are actually thinking about doing it but scared because they've never attempted a mod on a phone before but have some confidence of following directions precisely.

It's simple. I'm 15, did it using m iPhone and my Windows XP PC. Started off doing my MODS in command prompt, but then the more user friendly UI came out the same night, so I started using that. I hacked nearly everything, then missed the original look, so I restored. Now I changed the slider color and gradient, the battery, added a custom ring tone, and added mirror icons to the home screen. That's only a fraction of what I did earlier and I see no regrets.

I have only modded my ringtones and my carrier tag and it was a breeze. When I had a razr I modded that as well but it was using a UI which always makes thinga easier.

I found it easy to do especially with all the help and well written tutorials on this site. Now if I could only find a tutorial on using photoshop to do the graphics myself so I don't have to ask someone else to do something for me

The first thing I changed was the carrier logo as I was a bit afraid to mess up the phone. So, I started off with something small. That was a breeze. So, I went on to add some ringtones using iPhoneInterface. Afterwards I changed the battery, but got really TIRED of typing in all of the commands. Luckily Manzana came out and I used that software to change almost every graphic on the phone that can be changed! I haven't had to do a restore. The modding process has been trouble free for me.:laugh2:

I haven't even heard of Manzana yet! Gonna have to try that, but I only wanted to mod my carrier icon to the Audi rings and have completed that already.

Personally, I love the stock look of the phone.

Im using windows vista and im still considering doing the custom ringtones. One person said their phone slowed down after modding it and another said it deleted all the contacts. Can someone clarify the simplicity of the custom ringtones, will it effect any other files on the phone if i attempt it? Thanks to all who've replied with stories.

I chose "Yes, but nightmare and failure" because in the end I had a brick. I completed the ringtone mod successfuly but it took a while. For some reason it appears jailbreak didn't actually completely do its thing. I then tried the tethering mod which requires the same jailbreak but by the time I was done fiddling with the awful shell script they provided for OS X, it wouldn't properly sync with iTunes and had to be restored. Fortunately, Apple has done a great job with the whole backup and restore feature of the iPhone. I imagine it comes after a lot of direct experience on their part. :)

Sorry to hear that. Anyways thanks for sharing that experience. I will wait till October for the official update. I'm not ready to preform this mod.

Its not that hard.. I mean if you take it easy and go slowly don't rush you got it.. I will admit I tried to explore different things and modded a lot stuff I almost came close to a brick I had to restore phone but that didn't stop me I remodded my iPhone again...

My biggest concern is to make sure that the performance of my phone isn't effected in case I do mess something up by accident. My phone is running solid right now. I've read a couple of threads where people have deffective ones and they have to exchange, in some cases picking up an even worse one. I just don't think its worth the risk until I am very confident in doing it without any mistakes. I've modded motorola razr v3's before but thats a cheap phone to mess around like that with.

If someone who has successfuly installed custom ringtones, can you please answer these questions for me id appreciate it.

1. Will your contacts be erased?
2. Will your settings be erased?
3. Will photos be erased?
4. How long did it take for you to install?
5. Have you experienced more problems with your phone ever since installing the custom ringtones? (be honest please)

Thanks a lot, i'm sure all the answers can give people a better idea of wanting to do the mod or not.

I was scared as all hell. I used ifuntastic 2.0 for Mac. Its really easy made my own ringtones, changed my carrier logo. It was easy and it walks you through the steps with explicit detail. Everything is timed it tells you how long it the processes are over. Takes some of the edge off ...

1. Mine weren't
2. Mine weren't
3. Nope they are still there
4. 15 min tops, and thats taking my time plus added some other things too
5. Absolutely not, but my roommate messed up his phone trying to get ssh to work from his phone and forgot to upload a file and rebooted his phone and had problems. But was able to restore the back up with no problems.
