Switching SIM card from iPhone to other AT&T phones

In my spare time I like to do outdoor things (camping, kayaking, skiing, etc.) and I am worried about destroying my iPhone if I bring it along with me, so I have been leaving it at home when I venture out into the wild. This could be a problem if I ever run into trouble.

My question is: if I were to buy a cheap att phone off ebay, would I be able to switch the SIM card from my iPhone to the other phone? This would be a fantastic alternative to risking the destruction of my iPhone. Also, if only certain phones will function with the iPhone SIM, which phones will work?

You can use another AT&T phone--just pop the iPhone's SIM into it.

But IIRC it needs to be a somewhat current AT&T phone (don't think the older ATTWS GSM phones will work).

You can pick up a cheap prepaid phone if you don't want to go through eBay.

And if you are a new subscriber to AT&T, who didn't receive a subsidy discount on another phone (for the same line) you can get any phone AT&T currently offers at the discounted price (i.e., many for free). You will need to extend your contract for 2 years though (not 2 additional years; 2 years from buying the new phone--should only be max 2 month extension even if you bought and activated your iPhone on June 29).

probably a stupid question but does this work the other way around. If you already have an AT&T plan on some kind of smart phone/blackberry of some sort, can you just put the SIM card in the iPhone and use it. assuming you some how hacked/unlocked the iPhone first.

No, won't work the other way around (unless you really have unlocked your iphone--and by that I mean the Turbo SIM or soldering method).
