This forum is in BAD need of some serious moderation. As much as I liked this forum in the beginning, and think there are a great many users here who are Apple and iPhone enthusist who have a lot to offer, all the little teenage dorks on here are killing it for me.

This is the first device specific forum that I've been a part of that seems to have more haters (windows fan boys?) trashing the device than people talking about important things like tips and even constructive critisim about the device with comments on room for improvment.

Not that those posts aren't there, it's just that you can't post anything good, positive or even halfway constructive about the device without a bunch of, what sounds like Tweeners, jumping in to bash the crap out of it. The name calling, foul langauge, and personal attacks against good posters is and should be unacceptable.

Hopefully whoever runs this site will either set some standards or start enforcing the ones already in place. This could be a GREAT site if we can keep it fun, informative and constructive and not let it turn into another HowardForums free for all where anything goes.

If you kids hate the iPhone so much, why waste time here. Go play with your Sidekicks and EnV's and let us discuss our device, the good and the bad, in peace.

Feel the very same way.

I urge the members of the forum to please use the report feature. This is the fastest and easiest way for moderators/administrators to handle what is unacceptable behavior.

Yes, I agree there is a very large contingent of anti-Apple sentiment that finds its way to these forums. That being said, we do try and weed out those who are here for nothing more than trolling.

As the person who runs the site, it is important to keep and set standards. Over the past month, there have been a number of announcements. These have primarily dealt with spammers, flaming and general lack of good behavior. They all have one common theme. If you see something out of line, please use the report post feature. Just select the exclamation symbol below that sits under a users Avatar. This forum is growing in leaps and bounds. In addition, there is a main site that is managed. This makes it difficult to see every thread. I think we've done a good job of moderating the spam and trolls.

With regard to this particular thread, I have no issue with it. If people want to take issue with the Slide To Unlock, so be it. I will not moderate threads simply because they are negative about the iPhone. Now, I agree that it would be nice to see more tips, tricks, etc. However, it's common that most forums are filled with "problems". It's just a nature of the beast. The large collection of iPhone users who have no problems don't spend the time to share their positive experience. This is also a completely new technology causing people to question certain aspects of the device. This type of conversation rarely happens on my Treo forum. It did happen quite a bit on Everything Q, but that has dissipated.

I think in time (with moderation) and user feedback, this forum will settle down a bit. In a few months, I'd hope that discussion is more focused on getting the most from your iPhone. The ultimate goal of this forum is to create a friendly, knowledgeable place for iPhone users. If you've seen any of my announcements, I continue to use that line and strive to do just that.

I'm open to constructive criticism and welcome any member to send me a PM on how to improve the site. I can't promise we'll implement all recommendations, but I can promise that I'll do everything I can to make this the best place for iPhone discussion.

Additonally, I'm going to expand the number of moderators here at EIP post haste.

I agree. I don't post much but I do read this forum regularly. Maybe to help Chris out some of us could volunteer to MOD. I used to MOD the G.A.N.G (game audio network guild) boards for years. If you need help I am in.

I agree with both evilhomer and Chris.

evilhomer your right, there are a large number of haters, 'me to' posters, and tweeners on this forum who don't know how to behave politely in a public place.

Chris your approach so far has been acceptable. I don't think it has been great but so far your control over the forum has been adequate. The spam, flaming and trolling is minimal. That said I think it could be better. It is a difficult situation though, moderate to much and people resit and go away.

The report post feature is great but I think there needs to be more active moderation. Chris maybe you need someone to help you to surf the threads and stop stuff before it gets out of hand.

As for complaints I have no problem with them either. As long as they are legitimate and constructive gripes. The 'Slide to Unlock' thread is a good example I actually think that is a decent thread for the most part. Someone has a legitimate complaint and present their complaint in a logical and well thought out manner. The responces to the inital post where a little campy (mine included) but the thread as a whole I think is fine.

I think a lot of the issues on EIP right now will die down as time goes on. A lot of what we are seeing is a result of the initial hype of the phone. I think we saw similar amounts of hater traffic pre-launch but there was so much other traffic then that the bad stuff got lost in the noise. There is less noise now so the bad stuff is more noticeable. In time the bad stuff will settle down and we will be left with a great forum!

Chris,

I appreciate your quick response and it would appear that you have good intentions for this site. I am very glad to see that because we need a good place to discuss the iPhone and this site has great potential.

So that I'm clear, I was not speaking out against the Slider thread in particular, even though I posted my first Mod comment there. That's why I started this thread. I understand the genuine value of constructive critisim and understand the difference between it and just ugly bashing and flaming. I have been a Mod for over three years at PDAPhonehome.com under the same name. I will throw my hat in the ring and volunteer to help Mod this site if you feel that I could be of assistance. One of the places that I mod at PDAPH is the Garage Sale forum so I know the challenge of keeping a site SPAM free. :)

I will, however, need you to pay me the same salary as I earn moderating at PDAPH.com. Since they pay me nothing, this should be no problem for you. :laugh2:

I've had the iPhone since day one, work as the Manager of Information Systems of a very large bank, possess mulitple certifications in Cisco and MS and am an AVID fan and user of Apple and their products many years. (I only run Windows on my MacBook Pro now) If you think I can be of assistance in the forums, please let me know.

Thanks again for your quick reponse to my concerns and putting many of our minds at ease.

I agree, even though I haven't been here that long. However, I have a tremendous respect for Chris for what he's doing. I run 2 forums myself, and let me tell ya, it ain't easy.

Give it time to adjust to the influx of users. And ignore the posters you don't like.

I believe the overalll problem is one of immaturity, on the part of some of the posters and as well on the basis of the newness of this forum. Pdaphonehome, to me, was always one of the best moderated gentleman's forums ( btw, that is not a sexist remark, by this, I mean "gentleman-like" in terms of the interactions between posters) I have ever been involved in as a poster (complement, EvilHomer ) Treocentral also an excellent forum, but I surely have seen it cycle ( ha, the Monk and his entorurage, for instance) from wonderful to downrigh obnoxious.

Anyway, I am sticking with the forum and hoping it will mature. Keep up the good work, Chris, and please do get some moderators to help you out. Right now, though, there is a lot of chaff to sift through before I seem able to get to an actual grain of useful information....

Thanks for the kind words ShadowBoxer. I'd love to see this forum be as well thought of as PDAPhoneHome.com. I certainly seems to have a good quality of people to kick it off.

I've only been involved in one thread where someone came at me in attack mode, and in only two post-back-and-forths the thread was shut down. I learned my lesson about quoting someone who uses foul langauge (I should've used F*** while quoting. Duh, I'm a grownup I should'a figured that out on my own-sorry) But I was happy that it was handled so promptly.

Before iPhone was released I read these forums several times a day, hungry for any little bit of new information (or even speculation) because I just wanted to know anything at all about it. Now that it's here (and I've had it since iDay) I read posts here only a couple of times a day to see what problems people are having or to find cool new tips about using my amazing device. I think the haters may get bored eventually and start posting in other forums about new products from other companies. One can only hope! All in all I think they're doing a fine job moderating this forum.

LauraBee - Maybe all the haters will go to the Harry Potter forums now! LOL!

I think the SPAM, trolling and flaming her eon EIP is handled well. I think it could be faster but it is OK the way it is.

The biggest problem with EIP in my opinion is duplicate posts. The same thing over and over again. I am guilty of it myself I know. I don't know of anyway to reduce this either as i see it on other forums as well.

First off, I appreciate everyone taking the time to offer constructive criticism about the site. Being in its infancy, it's important these issues are brought to light and handled now.

Just a minor update... I've installed a hack that puts the msg, "Something Descriptive Here Will Yield More Responses" in the subject bar. Once you select the subject box, it automatically disappears, so it won't affect usability.

One step, but I feel a positive one.

Trying to handle this by creating Official posts (nothing official outside of them being the "main" post on a topic). This has worked in the Bluetooth section as we have Official discussions for the various car companies. Today I created a sticky for Official iPhone Bluetooth Compatibility discussion. This ferrets out to sub discussions on Official {Insert Car Manufacturer} threads. This keeps one main topic and allows for "official" subtopics -- this should keep the main topic from being unruly.

Now, the biggest offender of dupe thread(s) are the infamous DVD to iPhone converters, software, etc. They happen upon iPhone Software (really shouldn't be there), Mac and iPhone and Windows PC and iPhone.

There is a need for a master topic sticky for both the Mac and the PC section. Something that outlines the available methods and goes from there. I still think it might be ok for a member to post a question regarding specific software outside of the main topic, but this type of "master topic" would probably eliminate some of the dupes. Maybe the example of the sub-discussions would work for this as well. Master topic offering options on DVD to iPhone for PC -- DVD for iPhone for Mac. Links within the master topic to subforums for the more popular apps (ie. Handbrake).

Those threads become even more thorny when you throw in the companies (if you could even call them that) who pose as customers offering "free tutorials" and "free software", when that simply is not the case. I cannot tell you how many of these guys get removed and banned.

If anyone or a collective group want to take a stab at the DVD Master Topics, I'm all ears.

From this comment I would say you are an APPLE FAN BOY. There are a lot of people like myself who have NEVER used a MAC product or owned any IPOD who love the iPhone. Call me a Windows Fan Boy if you like but just because I use Windows instead of MAC and tell the truth about some of the short comings of the iPhone doesn't mean I am bashing the device.

Learn to expect the fact that not everyone loves the same things you do and you will be a happier person.

yes this is one of my favorite sites and I don't want to see it spammed and not being used to help others with iPhone troubles and disscussions, if you need any extra mods I'll be happy to help. Anything for this site.
