From this comment I would say you are an APPLE FAN BOY. There are a lot of people like myself who have NEVER used a MAC product or owned any IPOD who love the iPhone. Call me a Windows Fan Boy if you like but just because I use Windows instead of MAC and tell the truth about some of the short comings of the iPhone doesn't mean I am bashing the device.

Learn to expect the fact that not everyone loves the same things you do and you will be a happier person.
First off, this is going off topic and unnecessary when we are trying to discuss removing this very type of banter. I don't believe the OP was trying to bash Windows users, but rather pointing out the trolls that descended upon this forum to bash the iPhone. The OP doesn't mean that all Windows users are bad.

Okay, now let's get back to the topic at hand.

I too would love to volunteer my time as a MOD. I have experience albeit from Quake forums. And iPhone bashing/truth telling or whatever it is happens to be out of control but still something that happens ad-nauseum.

Instead of full mods I think we should try mods based on the forum you are in. That way someone who has more experience in Hardware will be able to help out those in the Hardware forum. They would also know what is accecptable for that forum.

I believe the overalll problem is one of immaturity, on the part of some of the posters and as well on the basis of the newness of this forum. Pdaphonehome, to me, was always one of the best moderated gentleman's forums ( btw, that is not a sexist remark, by this, I mean "gentleman-like" in terms of the interactions between posters) I have ever been involved in as a poster (complement, EvilHomer ) Treocentral also an excellent forum, but I surely have seen it cycle ( ha, the Monk and his entorurage, for instance) from wonderful to downrigh obnoxious.

Anyway, I am sticking with the forum and hoping it will mature. Keep up the good work, Chris, and please do get some moderators to help you out. Right now, though, there is a lot of chaff to sift through before I seem able to get to an actual grain of useful information....

I totally agree. I was talking more about the poster's ability to type in complete sentences and not be LOLOMGWTFBBQ!1111 all over the place. That drives me nuts.

I'd like to volunteer to be one of those mods. This place is a great community and I would be honored to donate my time and efforts to keep this place running strong and efficient.

I think this forum is going well for the time being. The software section has been great for modding thanks to some very helpful members of EIP. I personally don't see people bashing the iPhone at a troll level, everythread i seen about a problem or shortcomig has come from an iPhone owner, and they are allowed to express there problems and get feedback from other members

Some people don't know how to discuss a problem and just tag it as false or unnecessary, even though it's a problem for some members and thats what the forums are for to discuss issues.

There little trolling coming from iPhone haters who just say iPhone sucks!1!1 most everyone who has posted a problem has posted reason behind it. Like the slide to unlock thread, its coming from an iPhone owner who's reaching out to others who feel the same way.

Well anyways Chris I been a member of this forum almost since the iPhone was announced and had my iPhone since day one, I'm here mostly late at night past midnight so if you need moderatio during those time I volunteer.

Heres to keeping EIP a great forum for iPhone owners.

Sent from my iPhone.

I just recently sent Chris an email about how I was trilled to have a great forum where you could learn, share, and searh. But when someone ask a question for assistance and they get an answer such as, "Man cant you just do a search", then I loose the interest. I use to check this site and reply more than 4 times a day, now it is only once. But hey, I am not gone yet, I still "believe"

Honestly, I find myself to be pretty mature, im 15 and take care of my grand-parents and pay the bills (acctually getting them paid not paying) and in some cases your right, but don't go blaming "Teenage Dorks" just because our age is the most difficult to handle.

Great Idea here.
I just wish there was some neat feature that would automatically search out text in your thread title and body, for matches in threads previously posted. Instead of denying you the ability to post it again, maybe show you that it's been done already, and then have you confirm you still want to make the new thread. That would be NICE. Kind of a cross-reference checker thingy. lol :)

I completely agree with jacjac. Forum members need to give the poster the benefit of the doubt and many times a search, unless used with the exact terminolgy, will produce way to many or not enough results. Basically, don't be a jerk, if someones post irritates you to the point you don't want to answer the question, shut-up and leave it alone. Leave it for someone else to answer who understands there are many, many people new to forums that simply don't have your experience.

In my experience it's generally easier to answer the question than to prove to everyone (that may not have known) what a jerk you are by going off on them.

This forum is in BAD need of some serious moderation. As much as I liked this forum in the beginning, and think there are a great many users here who are Apple and iPhone enthusist who have a lot to offer, all the little teenage dorks on here are killing it for me.

This is the first device specific forum that I've been a part of that seems to have more haters (windows fan boys?) trashing the device than people talking about important things like tips and even constructive critisim about the device with comments on room for improvment.

Not that those posts aren't there, it's just that you can't post anything good, positive or even halfway constructive about the device without a bunch of, what sounds like Tweeners, jumping in to bash the crap out of it. The name calling, foul langauge, and personal attacks against good posters is and should be unacceptable.

Hopefully whoever runs this site will either set some standards or start enforcing the ones already in place. This could be a GREAT site if we can keep it fun, informative and constructive and not let it turn into another HowardForums free for all where anything goes.

If you kids hate the iPhone so much, why waste time here. Go play with your Sidekicks and EnV's and let us discuss our device, the good and the bad, in peace.
this is exactly why i haven't posted here since i bought the phone.

i've been around since apr-may and the fun before the release was the speculation. "what will it have?" "what won't it have?" "how much will the plan be?"'

now it's a bunch of drivel and between people who can't seem to end a sentence without typing LOL.

with that said, a lot of the stuff can't be reported, per se, because it's not exactly wrong...it's just annoying. and the last thing i want is for the board to turn into a police state where any topic that isn't deemed important by others is locked.

i think it will take some time for the board to get figured out. in the mean time, i'll continue to troll as i don't have anything of substance to post these days. you hear that kids? only post something that actually contributes to the board. what a novel idea!

Hear hear!

Can the "reply and quote" button be made smaller? Or make the Post Reply button bigger...

One of my biggest pet peeves is people hitting the reply and quote button right underneath a huge post instead of just hitting "reply". Especially if the post they're quoting is directly after it and someone makes a 1 line reply. And usually this continues if they hit reply and quote after the OP. It just adds up to be a lot of extra, unnecessary text.

Reply and quote has its place but never, ever to quote the entire post! I wish this board checked for that...

Ditto! Agreed! Yes, Let's!

I would ban posters posting:

"OLD NEWS!"

Wouldn't it be more appropriate and helpful just to post the link to the earlier post on EI, instead of just posting "OLD NEWS"?

Just a thought. We are trying to help each other here aren't we, or are we just trying to prove we knew that before you did?

I figure once the kids go back to school this forum will return to normal.

As for posting old news. I have made that mistake, but was not able to find it anywhere on this forum after being told.

So as jimwarden says:

Wouldn't it be more appropriate and helpful just to post the link to the earlier post on EI, instead of just posting "OLD NEWS"?

Also, it hard to find info if you have to read 159 negative post complaining about what the original Poster asked or said. I wouldn't be reading it if the Tittle didn't interest me. So why do I have to read 5 pages of complaints and end up where I started..

I have no issue with people posting old news, since this makes it way back up to top of the list for people that haven't seen it and will fall back down to the bottem if no one is interested. So posting you negative info only keep it at the top of the list for others to complaint about.

I like the modd'ing here, actually. Forums are for opinions and the exchange of different viewpoints, and the mods here seem very aware of that.

I have read all of your posts and will be taking steps to improve the quality of the forums at EIP. I don't have time right now to reply to all of your comments, I did want to provide you with a few updates:
  • I implemented a "Thank You" system. I hope this encourages members to help others. It also allows those helpful members to get recognition for their contributions. There have been some fantastic contributions of custom iPhone wallpapers and I even used the forums last night to solve a problem I had with my wife's iPhone. The only downside I can see is the "added post" it creates, but that's probably a small price to pay for the upside.
  • I personally did some heavy lifting when it came to moderation this morning. As best I could, threads were moved to their correct categories. At the recommendation of a few members, I've also created a new category for iPhone modifications. This will clean up the iPhone software category quite a bit. Plus, the modders belong in their own "advanced" forum. iPhone software is strictly for discussion of software on the iPhone. I also cleared out all of the iPhone to DVD stuff. In fact, I moved my own thread and did some major moving of posts. There is a dedicated DVD to iPhone conversion topic for PC users. As I did with the Bluetooth discussion, individual apps have their own "official" threads. I hope this curtails the cropping up of these threads. Going forward, they will be immediately locked and directed to discuss in the main DVD to iPhone thread. The DVD to iPhone Handbrake tutorial was moved to Mac and iPhone.
  • I removed the "multi-quote" and reputation system. Both are scarcely used and honestly they just clutter the interface. Hopefully, this will simplify things. Giving consideration to changing the icons to make Post Reply more prominent.
Things that are on my radar:
  • Creating a How To Guide of sorts that covers not only how to use the forums, but also forum etiquette. As evidenced by this thread, both are sorely needed.
  • I received a few offers to help with the admin duties. I appreciate the offers and will be adding moderators.
As always, spammers will continue to be dealt with brute force.

I hope these changes start to have some residual effects and we see some positive changes here at EIP.

Thanks to all for your feedback and support.

-Chris

New feature. Paste a full URL to a video site (YouTube, etc) and the video will appear inline within a thread. Sample here.
