I think Apple had baffeled us all with flasshy good looks and missed the boat in a one way with the iPhone.

Now before you all go sideways and turn this post in to a bash fest, please allow me to explain my comment.

I currently use a treo. No I am not a Palm zelot.

Here is my issue. The iPhone only comes with 4 to 8gb of memory space, and I see no mention of a card reader of any kind for expansion. I realize that my treo has much much less space then does the iPhone but it does have one saving grace, and that is its card reader.

In a day when iPods come with 30gb and beyond(not sure how big they get now days) it just seems to me that a 32gb iPhone would be a much better way to go from the get go!

Am I interested in an iPhone when Cingular allows me some time next decade to get a new phone?

I too use a Treo. Although it supports removable memory, Palm only officially supports 2GB. Plus, I'd say that Apple's 8GB flash memory will be much faster than accessing an SD card. Over time, you can expect Apple to increase the hard drive (as they get smaller and cheaper), but I still 8gb is impressive. More impressive will be the seamless transfer of content through iTunes. I also own a 60GB iPod, but that doesn't mean I don't have love for my Shuffle. I find that 240 songs is more than enough for my trip to the gym or a train ride into NYC. Not sure of the math, but 60GB of music is probably weeks of listening. However, with video becoming so prominent, that 8GB could get small very fast.

I agree with every thing you said except one small detail. With the osX like capability of this phone the availability of third party applications with be a huge market. This being said I still say 8gb just isn't going to cut it. I may be wrong, only time will tell.

It is kinda silly that they feature a large widescreen display for beautiful movie playback and then go and make the storage no larger than a Nano.

So Apple has gone proprietary again! I thought they had learned? I guess not!

i too am a treo palm user and a 60gb video ipod owner.
I must agree with everyone that 8gb is probably not enough space for an on the go type phone. I would like to see it bumped to at least 20gb.
but currently, i haven't seen a cel phone with anything over 3gb of storage space. So i guess 8gb is gooood enough for me.

I think 8GB may get tight, which could be a reason why Steve's limiting 3rd party additions. Who knows. There has been some musing about a hard drive-based iPhone. This could open up vast storage possibilities but would be more fragile and consume more precious battery life in a device with no removable battery.
You're on the money about flash performance. I have a 3G iPod, and it's a little irritating occasionally waiting for the HD to spin up and fill the cache.

I think that the 8GB hd is really too small. My entire collection is about 6gb so I'm hoping that 8GB is enough for the OS, phone memory, picture memory etc. I bet the hard drive is about 7.2 gb or something like that. Oh well I'm still buying one.

Everyone is jumping to early conclusions. Anyne who knows Steve and his love of the surprise announcements will realize that there are several features yet to be dislosed. I am certain that in either the first model or one shortly thereafter there will be larger models and/or expandable memory abiliites. And of course there will be 3rd party apps allowed, he isn't an idiot. He just likes to ease into certain things like that to ensure they are done right. Be patient. Godd thiings come to those who wait, and great things come to those who wait for Steve.

Why not start it off that way? maybe they want to just get it out into the public first. But Im am just curious if anyone knows, because I still haven't found any definate answer. If both the thread starter and you would hae read the article with Jobs explaining why he's waiting to use third party app's, you guys would understand.

And about the memory, its the first generation of the phone. Its not gonna be perfect. If the consumer demands more storage, then Apple will respond accordingly.

Agreed and lets not forget that 8GB is a lot of memory compared to today's phones (even those with microSD slots).

I personally think that 8gb is perfect for me. I have had a 4gb nano since they first came out. I love the fact that since I switched from my 30gb ipod I no longer feel like I have a lot of wasted space. I have a lot of varying changes in what I am listening to and I like keeping just what I am listening to most at the time on my nano. I think it is pointless to have 30gb or 60gb when you are only listening to 4gb of music. So what I am planning on doing is putting 4gb of music and one or two movies which I have encoded to around 700mb. So in total i will be at 5.4 gb with all the rest free doesn't sound so bad to me.

I think one of the main overall lessons to learn about all this stuff is that the name of the game is patience.
I know that my verizon plan doesn't expire until nov. and I may wait even longer for the second iPhone to come out. We all know its going to be better and faster and probably cheaper - so the question is...do we scramble to get one now (god knows the phone IS incredible) or do we wait a little (painfully) and get perhaps a better and cheaper one in 6months to a year.

I dunno.
