Unlocked but not jail broken

Moved to iPhone Jailbreak.
Do you know if it is factory unlocked or if it was unlocked with a GEVEY SIM card? A factory unlocked phone will never lock. You can update the firmware and jailbreak without having to worry about that. Unfortunately, the jailbreak for 4.3.5 is tethered. If you bought the phone used, do you know if the previous owner saved any of the SHSHs?
