Has your phone been unlocked via your carrier or by Ultrasn0w?
If it's been unlocked by your carrier you're safe to update your software. If you've used Ultrasn0w that means you've jailbroken, which in turn causes problems when you update the devices iOS. Unless you preserve the baseband you shouldn't update.

That means you're jailbroken. Updating your devices firmware will remove the unlock, unless the iPad baseband is installed.
