Use iPhone without plan

I haven't found it in black and white, I just wanted to confirm.
Is is possible to get the iPhone and just use it on Wi-fi networks for surfing the net without getting a plan from AT&T?

Also, I haven't seen it anywhere, but does iChat work with the iPhone?

Supposedly, nothing will work without a current service plan and up to date account.

why cant you just use the plan? wat is the point of buying then canceling? you already bought it you might as well keep it.

Once you have it activated and use another SIM card, you can do anything with it, except using the phone and EDGE:

I think the consensus of that other post is that it was a ridiculous idea and probably wont work because ATT would have a way to stop people from doing this.

Try it, but you need the data plan for the iPhone.
