First iPhone Review from Walt Mossberg

Some highlights:

- largest, highest resolution screen of any smart phone they've seen, most internal memory
- Impressive battery life and thin
- Feels solid
- Regarding the touch keyboard: "After five days of use, Walt -- who did most of the testing for this review -- was able to type on it as quickly and accurately as he could on the Palm Treo he has used for years."
- Can't use T-Mobile SIM cards
- Wi-Fi capability doesn't fully make up for the lack of a fast cellular data capability
- Multitouch: "effective, practical and fun"
- No way to copy/paste text
- Microsoft's Exchange system support
- Voice call quality was good, but not great
- Can't record video
- No Adobe Flash support
- Songs can't be set as ringtones

What no video ?

I love how they always compare the subsidized price of other smartphones to the un-subsidized price of the iPhone. I have paid full price to upgrade on numerous occasions and the prices are just about the same or higher than the iPhone.

Overall great review though. At least this guy used it unlike the last NY Times hack!

It was a very positive review. The only drawback he says is that it is on AT&T, which if you're on AT&T isn't a real drawback...and of course EDGE.

iiiiii caaaan't wait!

I am shocked by the no video feature? I was so confident this would be there since Apple has perfected the iSight in all of their laptops for so long. Oh well I guess.

Having to switch to a different view just to make a period or comma when texting was interesting. Not worried.
Ooo ok just to add. I see what Mossberg means by having to switch to use Period. Comma. etc... doesn't look like too much of a pill to take.
Take a look only if you want. That feature is on the lower left of the keypad. sorry if no one likes flickr. I have nothing to do with them. its just where the pic is. If you do not like flickr just load any pic of iPhone keypad and on the lower left you will see what I mean.

Mossberg Review - No iTunes Ringtones

I wish we had a little more information about how this is missing. It is not going to prevent me from purchasing the phone, but this really seems to be anti-intuitive or anti-concept. If any feature should be a part of this phone, that seems like a natural. I can't imagine Apple won't add this later.

I also wonder if they were just not able to place AAC songs as ringtones. Surely, there is still the possibility of converting to MP3 or your CD's that are in MP3 format. Anyone have some additional thoughts on this. I really would like some additional info on this nonfeature. But still, I am very excited about what this phone packs into it (there is no way you are going to make everyone happy and cram every possible feature into any technology).

I'm kinda shocked by the no songs as ringtones thingy...
not very important, but pretty SOP for most phones these days...
The no video thing is kinda disappointing, but the fact that he said he could zoom with the keyboard, more than makes up for any and all negative stuff about the phone. lol

One downside: Some accessories for iPods may not work properly on the iPhone. The headphone jack, which supports both stereo music and phone calls, is deeply recessed, so you may need an adapter for existing headphones. And, while the iPhone uses the standard iPod port on the bottom edge, it doesn't recognize all car adapters for playing music, only for charging. Apple is considering a software update to fix this.
Ruh Roh. Anyone care to comment?

No songs as ringtones is a serious drag and changes nothing re:me getting the phone. Still a drag though. Maybe 3rd party app later to do this. Id really like to have the music from the iPhone commercial as my ringtone.

"The display is made of a sturdy glass, not plastic, and while it did pick up smudges, it didn't acquire a single scratch, even though it was tossed into Walt's pocket or briefcase, or Katie's purse, without any protective case or holster. No scratches appeared on the rest of the body either."

This is DEFINITELY the best news i've heard. The accessory makers just took a collective crap.

now i REALLY won't be buying a case for the phone.
