Well I am jailbroke, but running 3.01. I used the 5.0 update in the post above, and I still have the tethering option in Settings - General - Network.
Are you sure? Try turning it on and then off. It will probably disappear.

My tethering is gone. I'm a little upset about that, but it's my own fault. I should have researched it better before hastily updating the carrier file. I would rather have tethering than MMS, but no use crying over spilled milk. I never really used tethering anyway (just like I won't use MMS), but it was so nice knowing it was there in case I ever wanted it.

Ohhhh noooooo. I guess I won't be updating to 5.5 then. I'm content with 5.0. Is there anyway to downgrade the carrier file?

I wonder if I could set up tethering again with the benM? I'm still on 3.0.1, it might work.

So, you have MMS and tethering right now? Did MMS break it and then you redid the BenM tething hack and that fixed it?

I'm on 3.0.1 with the 5.0 carrier. Before updating the carrier earlier today I had the 4.0 carrier.

BenM.at update for tethering
Don't know what carrier file I had before (sorry)

After doing this update :

I still have tethering
still have BenM.at
Visual Voicemail still works
Now I have the camera button for MMS but when I send something it gets the red marks (I read you have to wait for AT&T or call them to get the opt out thing removed)
Still don't know where to go to find the Carrier

I noticed that when I go to Cellular Data instead of all those numbers that it says in the article mine are ALL blank in Cellular Data, Visual Voicemail, and MMS except they all say :

APN wap.cingular

UPDATE : I found the Carrier and it's "AT&T 5.0" although I don't know what is was before doing this MMS thing

I'd like to correct some erroneous information posted earlier by the Pod People who momentarily took over my body.

My brother had 3.1, not 3.0, on his iPhone when he got the updated carrier file today

See, I only just tried tethering after getting MMS for the first time last night. I seem to have lost USB tethering but BlueTooth tethering is working fine. I updated the carrier to 5.0 a couple weeks ago and restarted the phone and MMS worked instantly. I didn't have to do anything different to get tethering to work last night.

Have you tried BT tethering?

Aaaaanyway....

I'm trying to send out MMS's... they're going through but no one seems to be getting them yet. Here's a weird thing though: I have 3G off because I'm home on WIFI and trying to save battery. I just sent an MMS and I clearly heard it going over Edge via my speakers (GSM interference).

Why would the phone choose to send an MMS over Edge when I was on WIFI? Do all MMS's have to use the cellular network to transmit? If so, that's very bad news for AT&T's network...
I just sent a test message and it works just fine. It goes through fairly quickly with no lag in sending or receiving.

I was running 3G while on it and heard no interference from GSM over my speakers, so I'm assuming it doesn't use Edge to send these messages. That would be kinda sad for AT&T.

The lamest part about this is that I have to wait until my friends and family with iPhones get this update after they get home from work today (including my husband). So far I can only MMS my friends who don't have iPhones and they're already sick of pictures of my dog sleeping next to my desk.

(If anyone would like said pictures of my dog next to my desk, just let me know - I'd be happy to MMS you one. ;) )
Are you up to 50 sent yet? All my friends that have iPhones have been inundating me with pics, all super excited to finally have gotten MMS.

You won't hear 3G interference on amplified speakers like you do with Edge... it's out of the audible range.

The iPhone will use either 3G or Edge if you have 3G off to send MMS. They do not transmit over WIFI. You probably understand this, but I want to make it clear for everyone else.

I'm confused. So you just enabled MMS but tethering still works? Have actually tried tethering? After enabling MMS today, my tethering toggle was still there until I turned it on, after turning it on, the tethering toggle completely disappears (just as it did for those that updated to 3.1).

Do you think I should do the BenM hack again? I'm just wondering if doing that will disable MMS now. What do you think?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure it does in fact use EDGE. I am the only one in my family that uses data but every month my other family members have erroneous data charges that are accrued by sending and receiving MMS. It's never over 1 MB but they are definitely present.
