It's in the control settings of a few games I have, do I put it on or off? What does it do? Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing here, but I would think it will have something to do with the vertical aspect of gameplay, where as the x axis is everything horizontal. Inverting usually means flipping it upside down.

It inverts the left pad on your controller (PS3 and Xbox 360). So instead of pushing the pad forward in order to, lets say, move forward, pushing it will make you move backwards. Hope that explains it.

Generally, for games where you slide your finger around to move, most people will agree that left is left and right is right. However, for the y-axis, some prefer to pushing up to look down and down to look up, and some prefer the opposite. It's a feel thing.

For mouse movement, I use it like a flight stick - forward is down and back is up.
