Does anybody know how to see what is making up the Other category when I connect my 5s to iTunes? Currently, it says that Other is at 5.40GB. I have deleted all of my voicemails and all of my text messages.

Could it be my yahoo and gmail accounts?

Thanks

It may consist of past contacts you had. I have wondered how to view what "other" consists of and to see if that stuff can be removed. I have past contacts that I don't have as a contact anymore still show up when I type for example the letter J.

How big is your messages section in Settings > General > Usage > Storage? A lot of times it's text messages that are causing this. This section can easily reach several GB with pictures and videos. It should reset when you delete them, but sometimes it doesn't. Try restoring from backup if a hard reset doesn't clear it. Another possibility is corrupt video data.

Contacts shouldn't be more than a few megabytes even if you have thousands of them.

How much space are the messages taking now? I just wanted to see if they really freed up that space. It always works for me, but some people have said it remains the same size for them.

When I plug my iPhone 5s into iTunes, it shows me how many gigabytes is being taken up by each category such as music, videos, apps, etc. One really large category is other. Can anyone tell me what is put in the other category?

Text messages, MMS, email that is stored locally or cached, notes, voice memos, browser cache and history, etc. It does not include the OS. The usage bar in iTunes only shows useable space. The total amount is a few GB less than the capacity of the phone because the OS isn't counted there.

A normal other section only has a few GB. It starts out less than 1 GB on new devices, but climbs with usage and storage. Never clearing out old texts is one of the biggest culprits of a large other section. You can see a breakdown of how much space each app is taking in Settings > General > Usage. If the other section is very large and there is nothing to explain that on your usage page, it is likely corrupt media files. The only way to clear it is to restore.
