What to do when 3.1.2 crashes

Tonight my iPhone crashed and wouldn't startup. So here is the big question - what do you do now? From what I've read, if you install 3.1.3 your phone will be able to be jailbreaked and unlocked. I am fortunate to have the older boot loader but that doesn't make a difference if there is no way to get the phone to boot. What have you guys done?

hinky,
1. Have you tried a hard reset (press and hold the home and power buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds)?
2. Do you have access to a Mac?
3. Is your SHSH on file with Sauriks server?
4. Do you need the unlock?

hinky,
1. Have you tried a hard reset (press and hold the home and power buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds)?
2. I know you are a PC user; do you have access to a Mac?
3. Is your SHSH on file with Sauriks server?
4. Do you need the unlock?
1. Yes - that reboots
2. Gracias - yes, I can have access to a Mac
3. Unfortunately I don't think so as I may have not done it on this replacement phone (which may mean I'm in trouble as I only have the ID). It's the old boot and not sure if that makes a difference, only regarded untethered when it can be jailbroken.
4. Yes... that's a big part of it.

Many thanks... you're golden trying to help so quickly. Not sure what to do here and I'm not sure anyone is in a position to say. On one side I don't want to update the phone which is/was still at 3.1.2. On the other hand, the phone is a brick indefinitely until this is figured out...

Looked at sn0wbreeze but not sure it really works. Can't find anyone that did and going to 3.1.3 is a big risk as per Mr. Blackra1n.

It's extremely important that you have that SHSH hash backed up in Cydia. Without that, you may not be able to unlock.

Was it jailbroken before the crash and do you have the new bootrom (tethered jailbreak)?

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask if you have the new bootrom (tethered jailbreak)?
Unfortunately it doesn't appear the SHSH has was backed up on this phone. I have the old bootrom (no tether required). If need be, jailbreaking is the most important. Five icons on the dock and backgrounder are practically a requirement!

Okay, your ability to unlock may be lost forever because of that. You should be able to jailbreak though. If your SHSH was backed up, I'd recommend restoring to 3.1.2 in iTunes and then creating a custom 3.1.3 FW with Pwnage Tool (to preserve your baseband). Since it isn't backed up, you'll need to restore to 3.1.3 in iTunes. You can then use Sn0wBreeze to jailbreak.

Holding my breath here... I used iH8sn0w and it seems to have pulled my SHSH from my phone and saved the file on the desktop. Now we'll see what happens.... many thanks.

It must be a miracle. I don't know exactly how I did it. I used QuickPwn and the 3.1.2 image but I don't think it needed it. It said "your jailbreak is done" but somehow the entire phone came back and all the apps. Wow... what a relief. Opening up Cydia I saw "This device has SHSHs on file for the iPhone OS 3.1.2" Bliss. Thanks so much for the help Europa.
