When someone calls me they can hear.....

This is going to sound weird and I just want to know if this has happened to anyone yet and if so, what to do to fix it.

So I am sitting at my house the other day with a few friends and my friend calls and I said, "Oh Rich is calling" and so I answer and he says, "Yo, I heard you say I was calling before you even picked up the phone". I was like whaat? So then when he came over and he heard my ringtone, he said he heard that through the phone too when he called.

So I went upstairs and called my cell phone through my house phone and I heard the phone ring then I heard my cell phone ringer through the phone I was on. Then I heard my friends talking in my room cutting in and out. Now, they didn't even pick up the phone since it was still ringing so what is causing them to hear before I pick up? Should I just go and get a new phone or has this happened to someone before?

I remember this used to happen a long time ago when GSM was first introduced (into Canada at least, back then when I lived there). I have NOT heard of this happening in a long time though!

Did not happen to me. Sound like you have a defective iPhone the phone broadcast before you pickup and this phone has no auto answer feature

THis is apparently common

I have the same problem. More and more frequently when people call me they can hear my phone and also whatever I am saying at the time. Now this is complicated by the fact that through testing I have realized that during this time the phone keeps on ringing and is not "mistakenly answered" by the phone due to an error. It in fact will got to voicemail still if the call isn't answered on the iPhone side. THis annoying feature has left me in a couple of bad positions such as a coworker calling me while me and my wife were intimately involved. I could imagine a far reaching problem such as this that is intermittent could catch many people by surprise and in fact could lead to lawsuits. If I was actually doing anything even mildly important/classified this phone would never leave my house. In an example a lawyer could inadvertently be voilating lawyer client privilege, a doctor could accidentally give out medical information of a sensitive nature, and those who work with classified clearance would have to constantly have the iPhone off to make sure that new leaks aren't created.
I myself assume that this is some sort of back door left open for domestic spying purposes and instead of it being completely inactive until the proper warrants are issued it just isn't coded right so it works intermittently all the time.

I spoke with Apple about the issue and they want my phone back for testing. They even upgraded me from a 4g to an 8g. I really hope they take this problem seriously because the iPhone is not gonna be roses if good morning america does an expose where we get to listen to matt lauer in the can while his phone rings unbeknownst to him.

Also quick question. Did you use the sim card that came with the iPhone or your old one?

This thread should be made a sticky because Apple needs to correct this issue and users need to be made aware of the possibilities. This issue could lead to a person being fired or divorced depending on what was said before the phone was answered. You can hear the person as clear as day on the other end.

I hope this gets fixed... This scares the crap out of me.

Has anyone done a full restore via iTunes and then still encountered this problem?

Is WiFi on?

Is bluetooth on?

Do you have a bluetooth headset connected? If so, what model?

Do you have the headphones plugged in?

I don't use the bluetooth headset at all. THis happens just anywhere the iPhone is. Tech walked me through a full restore and the problem remains.

I put this story on digg.

http://digg.com/Apple/iPhone_Security_Flaw_Callers_hear_you_talking_before_you_answer

I don't want the iPhone to get a bad rap, but people need to know about this.

--edit--

Update: I just tried to test this with my iPhone. I tried it with a land line and a cell phone. I did not have this issue.

To those having the issue: Are your calls coming from a land line or a cell phone? Who is the service provider for the incoming call?

When calling form a T-Mobile cell phone I can hear surounding external sounds before the call is answered.

When calling from a landline I can not hear any external sounds.

This is very interesting.. and could potentially be a big problem. I'll have to test this later when I have access to another cell and a landline.

Update:

I have tested this with a land line (I have no idea who the telephone provider is here at work) and I did not have the issue.

I also tested this with a AT&T cell phone and I did not have the issue.

This is not an Apple problem, my Samsung Blackjack does the same thing. My boss called and I go, "Oh it's Kurt calling" before I answered, when I did answer he said, "Yes, it is me". WEIRD!
