I'm a graphic artist/art director by trade, and a geek in my life (LOL) so know-how isn't the problem...

I just haven't seen a mod that I think looks better than what Apple gave us out of the box.

I started making my own icons, and even though it might have been more "my taste" or "my style" it still didn't top what Apple already did.

Anyone else feel this way?

(Not that I"m not open to customizing it... but I find myself saying "why... it looks so awesome how it is)...

I'm actually with you on this one. I also am an art director/graphic designer. If I were to change it, I'd make the icons just like osx and even the startup with the light grey bg with a dark grey Apple symbol...The only mod I really want to do are the ringtones because I don't think an update will come soon enough...

I feel the same for the most part. Theres a few thing's I'd like to tweak. Maybe put the actual AT&T logo up by the bars instead of just AT&T text. Also I'd like to take out the dumb 73 degrees from the weather icon. Other than that I havn't really seen anything that is better than what Apple gave us.

I'd definitely like to customize the sounds though.. I usually can't even hear when I get a text or email.

I don't have any desire to customize it for appearance sake. And I agree that most mods I've seen are not as good as stock (just my opinion).

Now I did want to add ringtones, mainly so I could have a louder ring. Fortunately right before I was about to get into the whole hacking thing I stumbled across the thread about that EXCELLENT (IMO) ringtone app. Bought it and had my own (noticeably louder) ringtones on my iPhone within minutes. Seems to be even louder if I use the Flanger or AutoWahWah effects (and it sounds cool too).

For those interested in the ringtone app, who may have missed the thread:

I'm with ya on the 73 degrees on the weather icon.

i also like the iPhone the way it is. No mods here other than adding ringtones.

aren't ringtones considered modding? Or are you talking about just icons? It's a computer. It's natural to want to add to it and make it "personal." Why would you NOT want to? That's what you should have asked!

I think it'll be worth the wait for the Apple iPhone update. But if for some reason the custom ringtones is not one of the updates, I'm going to have to attempt the mods.

I am with rondz. I will wait for the updates and see if we get the tools to manage most of these customizations ourselves. If Apple doesn't give us the tools then I will consider the mods. So for now I am being patient.

For me $10 for the app mentioned earlier seemed better than spending the time getting setup for modding only to do ringtones. Windows app though.

ive also yet to see one i actually like
I wouldn't mind many many more rings. Also it would be nice to have the ability to click the home button an additional time and have it hide the icons on the home screen. Right now the wallpaper is simply not getting its share of time. I don't use some icons like you tube and would love to be able to hide them.

Other then that, oh yah, that 73 thing, I am fine.

Id like to customize the carrier logo to say "Jazzy" for me, other than that I kinda think a lot of the icons are ghetto...but it would be cool to show your friends "hey, i hacked it already." also, whats this hubbub that if you mod your iPhone, the youtube tab doesn't work?

Where did you read that?

The only thing I know of is that Youtube doesn't work if you unlock the phone without subscribing to AT&T. I actually did unlock my iPhone (DVD Jon's method) while I was evaluating it (didn't want AT&T involved).

Besides the obvious (phone, visual voicemail, and EDGE) everything else worked except for YouTube.

+1 on modding the phone. I MIGHT be interested in ringtones (i like the old fashioned LOUD ring provided by Apple). I have no interest in changing the icons or logo. I WILL mod the iPhone if someone comes up with real functional programs (widgets) or adds functionality to the phone.

I want the modders to make the iPhone itself capable of advancing a track when its in sleep mode and your ipod is playing.

like the side buttons would be so much more useful if they skipped track rather than controlling volume.. usually i pick a volume for the situation and leave it there and thats that
, but i constantly have to slide to unlock and change tracks
