you have to sync the phone through iTunes. no drag and drop for the iPhone.

Not sure how much music you have in total. If you are like me and have way more then four or eight gigs, then your best bet would be to make a playlist of the music you do want on your new baby. Then tell iTunes to sync that playlist on to your precious little toy/phone.

That's the perfect way - just make a playlist called iPhone or something, and tell iTunes to Sync that playlist only.

Then drag and drop your fave tracks into the iPhone playlist, and sync away!

Click on the iPhone shown in the iTunes list, then click on the audio tab and select which playlist to allow syncing. Then click on the button on the bottom right (don't remember if it says sync or apply).

Once you've got the iPhone plugged in, iTunes will open by default. Once it opens, it will automatically sync. After it's finished, click on the music tab and select how you want it to sync with your phone. Select the playlist you want it to sync and then click the sync button again ( you might not even have to click the button).

plug your iPhone into your computer - launch iTunes (if it doesn't launch by itself)

click on the iPhone icon on the left in iTunes which appears when your iPhone connects

This opens the iPhone screen in iTunes.

Click on the MUSIC tab

you'll see a list of playlists

Check Sync Music - Check Selected playlists - check the iPhone playlist you want synced

Hit the button at the bottom of the page that says APPLY or SYNC

iTunes will do this automatically from then on.

Holy crap! Seriously?
It's drag and drop to a playlist - no issue, and actually better as you can build smart playlists that auto populate with new tracks, most played tracks, new videos or TV episodes, most popular tracks etc etc

Means your iPhone can automatically stay current without you having to remember what to drag and drop.

No probs - explore the world of smart playlists as well - a great way to keep your iPhone updated with your latest or fave material.

A Smart Playlist is a song list in Apple's iTunes application which is updated automatically depending a set of rules.

The ability to create playlists by mixing music tracks from different albums and genres has always been one of the cool features of iTunes.

iTunes (versions 3 and above) lets you personalize your listening experience by creating Smart Playlists based on powerful features like My Rating, Last Played, Keywords, and Total Play Count.

This feature is extremely useful for anyone with a digital music collection, especially iPod/iPhone users.
For example:

This playlist enables you to hear the songs that are purchased, and have not been heard in a while.

This is how I have it set up.

Playlist is Purchased.
Last played is not in the last X days/weeks/months.
(I chose 1 month.)
Size is less than 30 MB. This blocks out long songs/videos.
Podcast is false.
Limit to 50 Songs selected by random.
