Why are price discussions "off topic" everywhere?

Why are discussions about iPhone prices have being moved to the off-topic forum by the moderator? Are early adopter (who are very interested in these topics) being marginalized here too? Maybe a forum should be created where such things could be discussed without being labeled off topic and thus marginalized.

First off, discussions about forum policy should be in Off Topic. Secondly, not all price topics were moved to Off Topic. The ridiculous topics were moved there -- ie. shorting Apple stock tomorrow to get your $200. That has no place in the iPhone category which is "hardware" related.

There are two major threads that I've left in iPhone regarding the price drop, since most will look there for discussion. All other iPhone related topics were moved to General Discussion. There are countless threads cropping up that we don't need, so those get merged into the big thread.

why is a thread that argues that Apple is only concerned with profit and not customer needs considered off topic while others like "why am I not totally irked" considered a general iPhone topic? I think both belong in the same place and, since this is everything iPhone, it should not he off topic.

Well why don't you sticky a thread to discuss this controversial issue?

Secondly, shorting Apple stock is a very viable and ethical way for us to get our money back, unlike how Apple stole it from us to begin with. Why do you consider it "ridiculous"? I think you're just embarrassed and don't want to people to give any real consideration to methods at their disposal to get their hard earned dollars back, so you moved that thread to a bin where it would get the least amount of attention. If the thread belongs in the "General Discussion" folder, then why move it to "Off Topic"?

The iPhone category is for "hardware" related discussion only and has been since the inception of this forum.

For some reason, sticky topics get overlooked by members.Given the amount of activity on the related threads, it doesn't need to be stickied in order to stay at the top.

I'm embarrassed? C'mon...seriously, do you really believe that. The idea that someone is going to wake up and short Apple stock is far fetched. As such, it was moved to Off Topic or possibly General Discussion.

All I'm doing is managing the forums. That's what I've been doing since I started EIP back in June of 06. I don't appreciate your comments, but you are entitled to your opinion.

I don't appreciate you calling my idea to short sell a stock "ridiculous" either. As a matter of fact, THOUSANDS of people all over the world are doing JUST THAT at this very moment. It's called DAY TRADING, and it's a form of businesss. So you think people that engage in an ethical businesss practice are "ridiculous"? Well, you too have the right to your opinions, as uninformed as they may be. And it's your forum, so do as you please.
It doesn't surprise me that someone that runs an iPhone forum does so in a manner consistent with the unethical manner in which Apple runs it's businesss.

Ridiculous ... hmmmmmph.

Apple stock is already down a point and a half this morning, and I'm up $150 on a hundred shares. Buy lunchtime I will have doubled my $200 loss.

Thanks Apple!

Keep it up and you'll find yourself with a lifetime ban here at EIP.

I appreciate that running a forum like this is not easy. I also appreciate that decisions need to be made quickly in some cases. That said, I have no idea why my thread "It's ALL about the money for Apple", which was talking about the price change AND the fact that the only update to the iPhone was WiFi iTunes, was pushed to this forum. The proper iPhone forums are now full of threads that are simply about to the price drop and users' feelings about Apple and the choice to banish my thread now looks quite arbitrary given the perspective afforded by the passing of a couple of days.

Decisions were made on a number of topics at around midnight on the day this happened. They were also made "mid-vacation", which made this announcement all the more challenging for me. It was originally moved from iPhone because it had nothing to do with "hardware". Since it was more about Apple the company, it was moved to Off Topic. This whole fiasco has been a moving target. That being said, I did later move it into General Discussions which became the area for iComplaints. I set up a sticky with a few of the popular threads and merged similar threads.

That's pretty much it. I did my best. When I made an incorrect decision, I corrected it. Compared to Apple's own forums, I think we did a pretty good job here given the task at hand.

WOW this thread was pretty intense! I think its good that things were handled so swiftly, i'd hate for the admin. to lose controls of the forum. I've been on some where that happened for a while and its not any fun! :S

I hadn't noticed that it was moved out of off topic--my mistake. Yes, as I said in my complaint (that wasn't fully informed), I realize that this was not an easy task and you even corrected this before I complained. Thank you for all your work.
