Hey fellas,

I stopped at AT&T store today, just to see what was up? Asked few questions about iPhone, had lil conversation and everything. Well they've told me AGAIN for the 2nd TIME that I HAVE TO BE ELIGIBLE for an upgrade before I get iPhone. They're saying you have to sign 2 year contract, and to sign 2 year contract you Have to be eligible, they just wont let us sell iPhone to you. I was like "but what is the point of doing that when I will NOT GET discount on iPhone" they're like, well we just heard 4 days ago that thats how its going to go down, so we will not be able to sell it to you unless you wait one more month and then you'll be eligible for an upgrade. I just freaked out like crazy, I told them about the whole AT&T Online Helpdesk, that someone from this forum had conversation with, and how he/she was told that you do NOT have to be eligible for an upgrade, and you can still purchase an iPhone. So they were like, bring that conversation in, I was like well I will, and I made an appointment with their manager on Monday, because he wasn't in today. But yeah I am really upset rite now, I even requested whole Friday Off, so I can wait in line. but they're like if you talk to our manager, I don't know if he is nice enough they might let you slide by.

But still thats so garbage, there is so many ppl out there that will have to wait at least 6 or more months for an upgrade :(
This is going to suck....ANYONE WITH SOME SOURCES about this? That way I can take it in and tell these &*&%$%$ that I can buy my iPhone and NO ONE Will stop me :)

Thanks Guys

My current position on this issue is the person who told you that is wrong.

We shall ultimately see, but collecting all the various evidence and rumor going around as well as parsing in what we actually know to be true, I don't think you have much to worry about.

Just make sure someone else besides that guy gets the commission for your iPhone purchase on iDay, that is all.

Please understand that my comments are not being critical nor are they aimed at you.

I'm simply taking this opportunity to remind everyone that going to a store to ask questions about the iPhone is a complete waste of your time. They are specifically trained to not give out any info. Nor do they have any info other than what they may make up, just to look good or feed their own egos.

All the information about the iPhone is being carefuly controlled by Apple and if you want the latest, go to their web site. If you want the latest from AT&T, same thing... go to their web site, or watch it daily. Beyond that your only going to be disappointed and misled.

There has been a huge amount of misinformation circulated because people cannot be patient and just wait.

We are just a few days away at this point. Then it will be revealed accurately and all questions will be answered.

alright guys,
so what should I do? should I go and talk to the manger on monday or should I just wait till some more info is released? I really want iPhone, i mean I don't think I need to tell you this, since all of you are in love with iPhones. Chris Iam sry about my langauge I am just stressed and really mad about this whole eligibility thing.....I've paid all of my bills on time, and i've never gone into roaming or any other stupid stuff that would make them loose. So If I have to wait one more month to get iPhone i'll be really pissed. I really want this iPhone, I have the money and I've even talked to my parents about whole date plan and they said that they're cool with 80/month, so they'll take care of that for me monthly, and now if i don't get one for whole month, i'll prbly end up going crazy :(.

Thanks Guys

Huso

btw: does anyone have link to that one thread where someone from here was talking to an online AT&T representative and asked questions about eligibility and he was told that he doesn't have to be eligible for an upgrade to get iPhone?
Thanks

Please, take a deep breath. ;) Wait until the 29th, go in there, and buy the thing. You won't have a problem. Cingular (and I assume, ATT) never has prevented someone from buying a new phone, especially one this expensive and without discount, just because you are in a 2-year agreement with them. I've been with them for years, and whenever I did something (bought a new phone, changed to a limited-time plan discount, whatever) that required a 2 year agreement extension, they just re-sign you up for 2 years from the date you sign/buy the new phone.

No worries people!

Dude, I've checked it out several times and your source was wrong. Anyone can buy the iPhone, you will simply be extending your contract an additional 2 yrs.

Many people have told me information will be released BEFORE the release of the phone. I am sure that it will be explaine dvery clearly as AT&T and Apple both do not want large numbers of people wasting time in their stores when they cannot even get one.

I have a feeling there is more than what they are telling you and there must be ways around purchasing a new two year agreement.

Off the top of my head, i have heard of extensions as well as adding a line. Even if adding a line is your only option, $9.99 is better than the fees to cancel and repurchase the contract.

The growing consensus is that no one really knows except the big shots at Apple & AT&T...Time will tell.

is it? Cancellation=175 9.99x24 =240 But I guess it saves you the hassel of changing numbers.

I am inclined to believe the people on the Customer Service Helpline, #611, more then the people at the AT&T storefronts. I think the training and updates are more thorough and faster for the folks at the call centers...

those guys won't even get their final training until this Wednesday. Don't sweat it. If they don't sell it to you, then just order on online from Apple.com.

I believe they told you that, but I really wouldn't worry about it. I have called 611(a few times) and visited several At&T corporate stores(I had the same worries you did) the conversation goes something like this:

Me: I am not eligible for an upgrade until 1/08(even have them pull up the account and look) will I be able to purchase the iPhone on 6/29?

At&T Associate : Yes, you will be able to purchase one at full retail price, either $499 or $599 depending on the model you choose.

Me: You sure?

At&T associate: Yes, you will have to extend your contrat for an additional 2 years.

Can't see At&T turning away customers with $500+ in their hand, willing to extend your contract for 2 years(where AT&T makes their $$$) and add a data plan(another big money maker for At&T). Makes no businesss sense. Since Apple is controling this I am sure they wouldn't be too happy if AT&T was turing customers away.
