Not to start argument, but with the news of the iPod Touch and the release of the TyTn 2 (Kaiser), I'm sort of reconsidering the iPhone now. Bare in mind I've had one since day 1. Anyone else feeling this way? Just curious where everyone's at. Also, the iPod touch comes in a 16 gig size which is really nice! My main reasons for getting the iPhone was not for the phone or SMS, but rather everything else it has plus the slick interface. iPod Touch has all of this. So confused now....

The Kaiser has EVERYTHING, but it's ugly. I've never had a cell phone for more than six months, but right now nothing on the horizon excites me.

True, the Kaiser is not too pretty, but it's a sweet phone. I'm definitely not going to do anything right away, but the iPod touch changes things a little for me.

Wow. Looks like a top notch Smartphone, though not the best for music. Does it have a micro SD slot? Ah, I see that it does. Nice.

The phone I'm looking at to compete with the iPhone is the OpenMoko Neo1973. Even uglier than the Kaiser but it has a lot going for it. Similar hardware as the Kaiser (no keyboard), but it's open source built on Linux. Developers have access to everything on the phone, including all of the hardware. And best of all, it's unlocked. It will work on any GSM network in the world.

First I heard of it. This looks like it would be a huge hit for Linux users like my son, who is always looking for a better OS.

That does look pretty sweet (minus the colors of course!). But yeah, just having to do some thinking for the next few months...

That does look better but yeah, the shape is weird. Looks like it has a nice interface though.

Just saw the end of your post there. No edge or 3G? That's pretty bad, especially for what it can do!

I know. I've been following the development of the OpenMoko for over a year and I always thought it had 3G. This is a big disappointment. Hopefully they'll upgrade it fast. They are still working on the specs for the public version.

LOL. They even included:
easily solderable contact pads for the hardware hackers to have some fun.
(link)

They actually ENCOURAGE hackers! Even HARDWARE hackers! I LOOOVE IT!

Maybe some hardware hackers can give it 3G.

That would be nice. I definitely need at least Edge, but with the way it's designed, I could definitely see someone making it work 3G eventually.

Wow, there's a rumor that Google's theorized gPhone will be built upon the OpenMoko platform. It would have different hardware than the Neo1973, but built upon the OpenMoko software or whatever it's called. That would be great for the Neo development.

Definitely, I hadn't even heard of that one yet. Sounds interesting tho.

The neo has been on the horizon for a long time, now. I wouldn't hold my breath.

As far as the Kaiser, I had a tytn, wizard, and several Treos before that. Trust me, if nothing else, you'll miss iPhone's form factor. Only time will tell how well the iPhone holds up - but I can tell you from experience that my wizard only lasted a year before the hardware and software started breaking down - horribly. The tytn seemed destined for the same outcome, though I didn't use it nearly that long.

400 seems to be the top speed right now. I did have the first TyTn before the iPhone for over a year and it was great. I agree with the form factor thing too, no phone is as pretty as the iPhone, and TyTn 2 will definitely be more brick-like.
