Apple has convinced youtube to change from flash to h2.64 in order to play better on Apple tv. Steve Jobs has hinted on the ability to play you tube on the iPhone in this faq:
In an early iPhone FAQ, Jobs described this exact scenario:
Markoff: “Flash?”
Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”
Markoff: “What about YouTube–”
Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”

I wonder if there will eventually be youtube on ipod and iPhones.

If you read the quote you posted, Steve does more than hint at YouTube on the iPhone. Now that AppleTV has built in support for YouTube, I think it is a safe bet that the iPhone will support it as well.

BTW, there are already a couple of threads on YouTube and the iPhone you might want to do a search and check them out ;).
