Is it just me or does the YouTube button on the iPhone only provide you with a limited amount of videos? For example, I go to search and type in something I want to watch... i'll get No Videos... But then I go to Safari and search for the same thing and voila, there it is.... but I can't watch it because of the whole no flash thing. HeLp?

Yes, the youtube feature was a last minute addition and it a little buggy and also lacking some features.

The main bug that I have seen is that the "Most Viewed for All time" and the "Most Viewed for Today" shows the same list of videos.

And as far as the library of videos goes...it is in fact a condensed version of the actual YouTube library. The application basically just grabs all videos from m.youtube.com. I looked deeper into it and YouTube had this to say about lack of having more videos "Only a portion of YouTube videos are available on mobile at this time. We are working hard to bring you more!"

I don't think Apple has a hand in how many videos will show up. Lets just hope youtube upgrades their servers so that any video uploaded is automatically converted to 3GP.

I was told at the Apple store that as of now the only youtube videos that can be viewed are those in h.264 format. Logically, it would make sense if youtube created something that automatically converted all videos uploaded into a universal format such as the h.264 so hopefully something like that is in the works, but until then, those videos are the only format that can be viewed on the iPhone. Bummer if you ask me but oh well, I'm sure they will work something out

Actually, check it out...

If you are connected via WI-FI the video quality is very good and many videos are in stereo, which it seems like no videos are in stereo when i access from a normal pc.

If you are connected via EDGE, the same video is poorer quality and the sound is mono.

I've tried a number of videos and this seems to be the case almost always.

Obviously, it is odd that they went through the trouble of encoding everything twice for high and low speed connection. But, I'm glad they did. This is pretty cutting edge stuff, and I'm sure we are just a couple of years of having the 3g speeds available over most the ATT network, (not to mention an iPhone that will support that), until then this is a nice compromise.

Any way I can get the stereo audio when I watch youtube on my PC? I'm jealous now that the quality of videos can be better on my phone now than on my pc! Ha ha!

I think theres anly around 10,000 videos encoded to work on iPhone but thats increasing everyday....everyone should check out the Victor Wooten bass solo from what looks like an instructional video on their phone cause its amazing and so is the picture quality

yeah, youtube has so many videos that are FLV format, but iPhone supports only MPEG-4 and H.264 video.
I heard that google just convert about 10000 videos to H.264 which fit for iPhone and iPod, so there are still many videos on youtube that iPhone can not play, but I sure they will be able to be played on iPhone later.
If you really want to put youtube video on iPhone, just use some free online flv converter to converter them, such as vixy.net, keepvid.com and media-converter.com, both are good. :laugh2:

What are you doing that I'm not?

Every video I tried to search out, came up and was quick too.

When I bring up YouTube I can find whatever I want but I get the same thing each time: error playing (or loading) movie.

Because I have to use WiFi (I'm aboard a ship) with my iPhone, this only occurs with WiFi.

What are you doing that I'm not?

Thanks.

Are you using the you tube app in iPhone or are you trying to play videos from youtube.com? Youtube.com uses flash which is why videos don't play on iPhone...if you are using the iPhone youtube app and you still get this error meassage then you might have a problem....

You mention that you are on a wifi connection on a ship...care to elaborate on why type of ship, what type of connection you have.... If you are on a ship you are most likely using a satelite connection which can be just as slow as edge or even considerably worse in poor weather, cloud coverage etc....

What I think is happenning in your case is that the youtube app thinks you are on a fast wifi connection but in reality the Internet connection you are using is really quite slow... My guess is this is confusing the app and giving you the error message.

Thanks for the response.

I am using the YouTube widget that came with the iPhone. But the same thing happens if I go through Safari to YouTube.

Regarding the ship's setup: wifi to the network which has a 524kb satellite connection shared by all aboard (5 to 20 +/- most of the time).

It's very perplexing because everything works right up until it begins to play. Then I get the message.

Frank,

From what you are telling me your problem lies in your Internet connection...that 500k connection share between that many people is most certainly the issue...like i said before, it sounds like the slow wifi connection confuses iPhone..

I can watch movies in the youtube app over edge but the quality is compromised which means that it can be done, in your case though it sounds like you are going to have to use the wifi when everyone else is sleeping...

Just to clarify again, videos will NOT work when opened in safari....videos must be found and opened through the youtube widget....
