YouTube quality

does anyone have a problem with the video quality on youtube? When I am at my friends house the quality is prestine but at work it is really bad quality.. I tried the same videos to see if that was the case but its not.. Does anyone else have that problem?

I could have swore I heard that if you use EDGE the quality is different then WiFi but don't take my words for it.. I have noticed different quality tho different areas I wonder why tho its all the same videos.

Yeah, that's true. If EDGE is running, YouTube is horrible. Make sure you're on WiFi.

Definitely different performance when using wifi

I can't get YouTube to play more than 10% at all when using my wifi. They work great on Edge. I think this is a genuine bug.

so I posted my first you tube video and I just noticed that if I watch it via 3G it's all pixely, but it's very good via wifi.

So where is the quality dropping? The iPhone or does YouTube do something?

Wifi is generally faster than 3G. So if you are in a weak 3G signal area, the quality is not going to be as good. Actually in a strong 3G signal it still may not look as good as on wifi.

Youtube encodes every video at two qualities... broadband, and mobile. Unfortunately, 3G, while faster than Edge, still falls under the slower category, so you'll see the same video you'll see on Edge. You'll just see it faster.

It's interesting because the Now Playing shows trailers at Wi-fi quality on the 3G network. And it plays fine. Too bad YouTube intentionally downgrades it.

Videos are always lower quality over 3g.

3G Unrestrictor allows you to use apps that are WiFi only on 3G. You have to jailbreak to install it. It should work with FaceTime once the iPhone 4 is jailbroken. Apple allows high quality YouTube videos on WiFi only, this app allows you to view them in high quality when you're on 3G. It also lets you download apps that are greater than 10 MB over 3G. That's normally restricted to WiFi only.
